What to wear to an interview? Those with experience/advice would be much appreciated!

We're meeting at a bookstore. He said that his interviews are "pretty casual", but I'm still not sure what to wear.

For those of you who've went through the interview process already, what should I wear? Are jeans a big no-no? Sweaters? What about colour (should I stay away from bright colours)?

Please be specific and don't just say "business casual" or "clean and neat".

I'm a girl, by the way.

Jeans are fine IMO. If it is warm, maybe a skirt.

A nice top, nothing too revealing obviously. If he says casual, just go fairly casual. I wore jeans to my MIT interview (as a guy…) and it didn’t seem to be a problem.

If you were told it is casual, then I suspect a nice pair of jeans will be fine - just nothing with stress marks or fading. Adding some accessories like jewelry is fine to dress it up a bit, just nothing that draws their attention away from what you’re saying. Modest make up is good, if you wear any at all. A nice sweater or other top that is not too tight or too revealing will complete the look nicely. Your attitude and the way you present yourself (with confidence, semi-professional) is more important than what you are wearing. Think of simple, but nice, “plain Jane” attire so they are not distracted by flashy huge earrings or mass amounts of eyeliner.

Thanks for the advice, but I just found the perfect thing to wear (: it’s not too formal, but not too casual. It also expresses who I am but is not at all over-the-top. It’s not distracting, but nor is it too plain. IMO it’s the perfect balance. Horray! Thanks for commenting, though.

No offense, but I always thought of you as a guy.

If it’s casual and at a bookstore I would go with what other people have said. Keep in mind, though, that it never hurts to be a little overdressed. ;)

I wish you the best of luck!

LOL Oh, no… is a particular reason? (:

Thanks! I hope it goes well…

Not really haha, just got that vibe I guess.

Oh dear, the way I type gives off a man vibe? NOO LOL

It really depends. If they ask you to wear something casual (like my Yale interviewer did) wear jeans with a nice looking shirt, maybe a polo or an argyle sweater or something. Obviously don’t wear your MegaDeth tour t-shirt or anything. If they don’t say anything, I’d be safe and wear khakis with a dress shirt + sweater and dress shoes. It would probably make a better impression than going casual without being asked.

Well now that I know you are a girl, I definitely don’t get the vibe, so I guess that’s good? haha Maybe it was just me.

Also beware of your interviewer’s ultra-liberal views :)

My H does the Harvard interviews. You all are way overthinking this !!! Just look like YOURSELF - nothing too extreme.Ask yourself " Am I dressed appropiately for a college interview ? " You will be fine- I would spend more time on how you want to convince someone WHY you belong at Harvard !!

Just an update: my interview went GREAT! :D

Good to hear!

I was talking about this very subject the other day with some moms. We all agreed that casual dress meant khaki pants and a polo shirt.

One mom related a story about her son (now a freshman at Harvard) insisting it was ok to wear shorts to the interview because thats what he deemed casual to be. She could not convince him so he wore shorts.

Still a little care put into your appearance shows the interviewer that the interview is important to you.
