What should a guy, in the middle of August, wear to a college interview?

long-sleeve dress shirt, a tie, khakis, dress shoes and a sport coat/blazer.

if your interviewer tells you it's rather informal, go with khakis and a polo shirt. no tie, no jacket.

i wore jacket and tie to all my interviews two years ago.

It really depends. I usually stuck to what instict told me. Like with my Harvey Mudd interview I wore a suit b/c it was at a hotel. But my other five were all at coffee places or diners, so i usually wore a pair of shorts and a generally nice t-shirt [so some might go against my judgement seeing it as too casual]. Though I did have a 2nd interivew for one college at the guy's house so I stepped up to nice khakis considering the odd situation.

And if you've got several things to choose from, I'd say err on the side of conservative. It's better to dress slightly conservatively than raise some eyebrows before you even open your mouth.

for my dartmouth interview i wore a dress shirt and tie w/ dress shoes and nice pants but for my harvard interview at my school my interviewer ended the call by saying "oh by the way, don't dress formal or anything" so i just wore my usual of jeans, tennis shoes and a polo shirt

Like Tony said, it depends on the location of the interview. For one of my interviews, it was at the interviewer's house, so I wore a long-sleeve dressy shirt and khakis. Another interview I had was at Moe's, so I just wore Jean pants and a polo shirt. Find out where your interview will be held at, and dress accordingly.

yeah location is a good indicator, my dartmouth interview was at a law firm so that gave it away
