What To Wear To Interview For Research

I've got a couple interviews lined up next week for research, what should I wear to the interview? I've heard different things, from dressing in jeans and a tee to wearing a suit. It's not payed and it'll be like 7-10 hrs a week (for both positions) doing scut work.

Any ideas?

well then dress like a rough neck, thats a no brainer…

Haha jk, you should be fine with dress shirt, dress pants, and dress shoes. Shoot, if I was you, I’d probably just wear dress shirt…

nice jeans and a nice button down shirt?

Assuming you’re a guy, as casually as flutterfly said (nice jeans and button down shirt) or as dressy as dockers and a button down shirt. Decent shoes and socks.

No t-shirts; no flip-flops. Even if it’s not paid, you’re going for an interview, not the beach or a beer fest.

Get suited an booted. It’s better to be overdressed than under. If there are others going in for the interview or get a feel for the situation, you can take off the tie and change the shoes to stay appropriate.

thanks guys

The location of your interview could be a good predictor. The PhD student who interviewed me told me to meet him at Qualcomm Cafe. He came dressed in jeans, a leather jacket, and an old baseball cap, haha. I’m sure I could’ve gotten away with casual attire. I wore a button-down shirt, jeans, and canvas shoes–something I might wear any other day to campus.
I got the research position, btw. =) Good luck!
(A suit kind of seems like overkill, but do what makes you comfortable.)
