what type of college?

Hi CC!

I'm hoping you can help me with my situation. High school was a pretty rough time for my family and I (mother diagnosed with cancer my freshmen year and passed away my senior) and it took a toll on my academics (GPA unweighted was around 2.7) so this landed me in a local community college. I am doing very well now in CC (around a 3.8) and am looking to transfer next year. My question is what range of schools should I be looking at? Is a school like NYU or U hartford completely out of my range? I want to major in Recording Engineering or Music Industry and for most schools I need to audition. I feel I have the music ability and knowledge but I want to know how my poor HS performance will limit me.

You should most definitely check out U Hartford. It is most certainly NOT out of your range.

They have an excellent music & art school, and they'll look way beyond your grades, especially considering the circumstances.

Great luck to you! You are poised to land on both feet!

Ithaca College has an excellent music program with great alumni connections in NYC and LA. I don't think that your HS performance will have a negative impact considering your CC performance and other circumstances.

The U/Hartford music business program is administered through the Hartt School, their attached conservatory. To the best of my recollection, the program is audition based, and requires a level of instrumental or vocal proficiency. Admission is both to Hartt and U/Hartford, so you have to meet U/Hartford's minimum academic standard, which are most likely detailed on the U/Hartford webpages. The academic parameters can be bent slightly for a strong audition or advanced musical background. The audition is not at the standard to which performance degree candidates are held. The standards for performance are much higher for these candidates. The Hartt page is here: THE HARTT SCHOOL: MUSIC-DANCE-THEATRE. They offer BM's both in Music Management and Music Production & Technology. There also a BS in Acoustics and Music which I believe is an engineering oriented program. Additionally, there's a BA in Performing Arts Management.

I don't see your grades as a major issue.

There is a poster HarttAdmissions that posts frequently on CC's music major foum There is a contact number listed here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1060977675-post55.html

Look at SUNY Oneonta for Music industry. Decent program, inexpensive tuition. It's located about an hour and a half southwest of Albany NY.

Ithaca requires that you pass an audition on a classical instrument and be a music major before you are eligible for one of the few spots to take any music recording. The odds against are pretty brutal. Hartford has an audition on either a classical or jazz basis. Try Drexel, Univ. of New Haven, Northeastern, UMass Lowell, Hofstra or SUNY Fredonia & Oneonta.

As an update to my prior post, skip Hofstra. It apparently has film radio & tv recording, but not music.
