I’m going into my sophomore year in high school. I am planning on doing collegiate high school and earning my AA before applying to UF. I am majoring in elementary education. What I really want to do is focus on getting a 4.0 in dual enrollment and extra curriculars but I obviously want to maximize my chances of acceptance. Should I also take some ap classes (even though I don’t need them for my aa)? I guess what I’m asking is if I have my AA at application time do they care about high school rigor?
Yes, UF does care about High School rigor (it’s as important as GPA, and more important that SAT/ACT scores), but they view dual enrollment classes as being “rigorous”.
You’ll want to take the most rigorous schedule available at YOUR school. If your school guidance counselor says you’re taking the most rigorous schedule, then you’re fine. They can recommend taking AP’s or not. However, with all of the college credits you’re earning via DE, AP’s seem like a waste.
Good Luck!
Unfortunately my school counselors are not helpful in this (my brother got into uf doing the opposite of what they recommended). Technically the MOST rigorous schedule would include AP classes but all the busy work of AP classes might affect my grades and ability to do ECs related to my major. But if uf wants AP I’m giving them AP.
My D is a HS/AA “freshman” at UF - she entered as a “3” (junior) and is studying engineering.
Yes, UF will look at the rigor of your HS classes. My D was only required to take one class at her HS (that class could have been Florida virtual).
I recommend taking honors HS classes for the classes you are required to take at HS (and forgo AP if it is at the expense of DE). My D opted for the DE classes over AP classes.
Thanks that is what I wanted to know. I’m taking honors for all the classes I have to take at the HS but I could also take a couple of APs in place of honors. I really don’t want to because I don’t need the credits but I also want a strong application. Thanks to you both for your responses. Go gators!
