If i want to match into :
1. Dermatology
2. Radiology Diagnosis
3. Radiology Oncology
4. Ophthalmology
5. Anesthesiology

There is nothing you can possibly do/study at the undergrad level to improve your chances.

Matching into these most competitive of fields largely depends on

— USMLE scores
— med school grades (including membership in AOA)
— performance in clinical rotations in med school
— interview skills
— publications in the specialty area

What undergrad/pre-med courses to take in order to be better prepared for the speciality or related publications? Other than USMLE scores or GPA in med school…

Dermatology - what related courses?

Radiology Diagnosis - what courses are more helpful?

Radiology Oncology - same as above

Ophthalmology - same as above

Anesthesiology - same as above

Agree. One step at a time kid. You have to get into med school before you even have a shot at those competitive specialities.

If you really, really want to do something, D1 said the rads and rad oncology groups at her med school really liked the fact she’d done high energy research (has 2 pubs in the field) and had undergrad and grad quantum mechanics, lots of circuits, computer programming, grad biophysics. Plus a whole math major to go with it.

(But that still doesn’t mean she’ll get to go into either of those specialities, although she was invited to do a 1st year rotation/tag-a-long in their depts.)

The most important thing for you now is to get into med school. So take the classes that will get you the highest GPA.

If you think you can do well in Bio-medical Engineering, you may consider majoring in this. This will prepare you well any research in med school, especially in Radiology -math,computer and physics skills come in very handy. Do not do this unless you have what it takes get a high GPA in these classes.

What undergrad courses should i take to better prepare for certain med specialties
