What university should I go to in order to become a space engineer?

Criteria:

-It should have sufficiently good programs that will help me become an engineer in the space industry.
-It has to be affordable (or have good financial aid, but not loans)
-It has to be in my home state of California.

I was considering San Jose State University, but I'm thinking about other options.

More information: I have a GPA of 3.9 and got a score of 2160 on the SAT.

Aerospace Engineering? You might want to look into Cal Poly SLO.

It has to be affordable (or have good financial aid, but not loans)

How much will your family pay?

Would you qualify for financial aid?

Nearly all schools put loans in FA pkgs to cover some of “need”.

I’ve heard that they have good engineering programs, but SJSU students made a satellite:
[TechEdSat - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](TechEdSat - Wikipedia)

I asked my mother about it, and she said that it was complicated.

I can’t find out until after January 1st, though.

It seems that you’re pretty uninformed with the whole financial aid process… You need to understand how much your family can afford - that will eliminate/add schools to your list.

So did Cal Poly SLO

Aerospace Engineering can be very competitive. Apply to several colleges.

You can’t and should not focus on becoming a “space engineer” in college. Major in mechanical or electrical engineering. Then pursue a graduate degree in aeronautical engineering.

UA Huntsville may have a good scholarship:

It has mechanical engineering with an aerospace option, and it is near the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center.

*Quote:

How much will your family pay?

I asked my mother about it, and she said that it was complicated.*

Sit down and tell your mom that:

1) You need to know because your choice of schools to apply to depends on this info.

2) Schools may expect the family to pay more than it can.

3) If your family can’t pay much, and isn’t low income, then you’re going to have to apply to schools where you’d get a near free ride/free ride.

4) The app process is time consuming and expensive, so you can’t waste time/money on schools that won’t be affordable.

5) YOU, the student, can only borrow $5500 for frosh year. Your mom may not know that and may think that you can borrow as much as you need. You can’t.

6) If your parents want you to borrow more than 5500 then THEY would have to qualify and co-sign those loans and THEY would be responsible if you couldn’t pay those loans back. If your parents have any credit issues, then they won’t qualify. Extra private loans aren’t a good idea anyway.

Is your family low income?

are your parents divorced? Anyone remarried?

Do your parents have a good income, but lots of bills?

Why are you restricting to Calif? Calif isn’t always the best place for college if you need merit scholarships for engineering.

If your mom still is vague, then you really have to assume that she can’t pay much. So, then you need to include schools that will give you HUGE merit scholarships for your stats. And, I mean HUGE. “Good scholarships” won’t be enough because they’ll leave you with too much uncovered costs.

YOU can only borrow $5500

With your stats, there are good schools with engineering that would give you free tuition or more.

Sit down with your parents and talk to them. Let them know that if they can’t pay or can’t pay much, you need to know that now. Delaying the “bad news” will only hurt you in the long run.

BTW…what is your career goal? AeroE is rather limiting. The same companies that hire AeroE will also hire EE and MechE…and those degrees are more marketable.

I am sure that I want my career to be in the aerospace industry.

So where are those good AE schools with good merit scholarships?

Could you tell us how much merit you need? Full tuition? More? what?

If you were to get a full tuition scholarship, you’d still need about $15k per year to cover room, board, books, fees, travel, and personal expenses.

have you gotten more info from your parents?

You may not have understood what I meant. I understand that you want a career in something that involves aircrafts or spacecrafts. That is fine. What I meant was to work in THOSE fields, you don’t need an aeroE degree. They hire people with various eng’g degrees…EE, MechE, AeroE, etc.

She truly doesn’t know.

So I’ll assume a full tuition or a full ride.

What is your M+CR on your SAT from one sitting?

Is your family low income? or does it have a good income, but money is tight?

If you go to this thread for some schools that will give you full tuition or more…
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/16145676-post285.html</a></p>

Alabama would give you free tuition PLUS 2500 per year. NASA and Boeing are in Alabama so there are internships and opportunities there. The state is also home to the second largest research park in the nation…Cummings Research Park.

Bama has a brand new Science and Engineering Complex.

Go to this link…you’d get TWO scholarships…one from the univ for free tuition, and one from the college of eng’g for 2500 per year. So, a total of over $100k in scholarship money.

http://eng.ua.edu/undergraduate/scholarships/</a></p>

Apply now…the app is easy, and you have to apply before Dec 15 to get the money.

mom2collegekids, OP stated he/she wants to stay in-state

^^^

I know that.

The student likely has money issues, and that may mean having to leave the state since Calif isn’t a great source for HUGE merit from colleges with eng’g.

* She truly doesn’t know.

So I’ll assume a full tuition or a full ride.

So where are those good AE schools with good merit scholarships?*

He asked where he could get good merit scholarships.

Frankly, when we’ve seen parents give answers like this, it usually means that all of their income is “spoken for” (mortgage, cars, bills, etc), so little to no money can be given for college.

This student needs to be open to grabbing as much merit from wherever he can otherwise he may not have anything affordable, except commuting to a local public…if that’s even possible.

1470 (680 for CR, 790 for M)

And I am now willing to accept any university in the US of A. My mother really wants me to get a scholarship.

One problem with Alabama:
“4 units of social sciences, including world history or a comparable course”

How is a “unit” defined?

Because I took 1 year of World History, 1 year of U.S. History, and am currently taking 1/2 a year of Econ. and 1/2 a year of Gov.

Bama doesn’t hold tight to that req’t if the student comes from a state that doesn’t require 4 years.

[Aerospace Engineering Home - Mechanical And Aerospace Engineering - Oklahoma State University](http://www.mae.okstate.edu/aeroeng.html)

So if I should get a BS in mechanical and an MS in aerospace, will that take 10 years or 6 years?
