So I have a realllly low GPA, 3.0. I got a 2.77 my freshmen year, 2.77 soph, and 3.6 junior year.

My SAT is 2210, with a perfect score in math. (800 M, 730 CR, 680 W)

I have really solid essays (editted and reviewed by Ivy League undergrads) and really nice ECs:
Captain of Mock Trial
Captain of Model UN
Editor in Chief of Yearbook
Prom Committee
Varsity Swim 9, 10
Varsity Volleyball 9, 10
yada yada yada more bs groups like chess club, lulz

I was deferred from Georgetown today and am getting really paranoid about this college thing. I really want to go to a name brand school but I think they'll all reject me with a 3.0! Are there any nice college suggestions that I could probably get in?

Thanks so much!

Look at the common data sets for a bunch of colleges. To tell if a college prefers GPA or SAT, look at the percentages for # of people in the top 10% of the class, SAT averages, and GPA distribution. Here are some examples.

Vanderbilt prefers test scores because its SAT averages are in the high 700s for the 75th percentile of scores and around 84.6% of students were in the top 10%. Approx 50% of people had GPAs of 3.75 or higher, and the average GPA is 3.71.

Similarly, Carnegie Mellon seems to prefer test scores too because the score for each section of the SAT in the 75th percentile is in the mid to high 700s. Around 72% of students were in the top 10%, and 48% of people had GPAs or 3.75 or higher. The average GPA is 3.64.

On the other hand, UCLA favors GPA far more than test scores. The score for each SAT section in the 75th percentile is in the low 700s (and 690 for CR) while around 97% of students were in the top 10%. Also, over 90% of people had a GPA of 3.75 or higher.

So yeah. Look at the common data sets for the top 30 schools and the ones that prefer test scores will be evident. Since your SAT scores are either at or above the 75th percentile for most schools, you should have somewhat of a shot at the schools that seem to prefer test scores over GPA.

I’m in the same situation as you (low GPA 3.35 UW and high SAT 1540/1600), so this is how I chose the schools to aim for. Good luck :D

Looked at some of your other posts to get a better sense of what you’re looking for.

Top name brand schools are exceedingly unlikely for you. They’ve got lots of applicants with high SAT/ACT scores and GPAs much higher than yours. Or, they’ve got high scores, GPAs slightly higher than yours, but took highly demanding courses in high school.

One of the so-called [Colleges That Change Lives | Changing Lives, One Student at a Time](http://ctcl.org) might work. Or, look at a flagship like Alabama or Pitt. Or go local, put in the sweat equity to get a good college GPA, and then transfer.

Bump, I’m interested in this as well. With an ACT of 33 but a weighted GPA of 3.76, it’d be nice to know what reaches I could possibly get in to.
