What were your PSAT/SAT scores as a sophomore?

@rhapsody17 The only money I spent on SAT prep was for a few books (the blue book, direct hits and dr. chung’s although I ended up not using dr. chung’s that much). I took the SAT 3 times. The first and second time I did a lot of full timed practice tests (probably 3 before the first test and 3 before the second tests). This practice alone brought my score up to the low 2100s. For these two tests and my PSATs I noticed a trend that for the entire test, I got no easy questions incorrect, maybe 1-3 medium questions incorrect, and the rest of the 15 or so incorrect questions would all be hard level questions. So I focused all my time on the hard questions. For example I went on CC and I tried to do all the problems that people had questions on in the SAT forum and then see if my answer was the same as what other people had answered in the responses. For math, I listened to all the level 5 problem questions on Khan Academy, twice. I googled level 5 questions and did several the week before my exam.

@dsi441 colleges don’t even look at Junior year PSAT scores. The only way a college will have a remote indication is if you are a NMF, NMSF, or commended

@averagewhiteguy‌ mine had an hour of vocabulary prep and thats about it. That, and english isn’t my first language and I’m a slow reader. But do you think that this score is so bad, I won’t even be able to get into the school?

BTW. I found out my score through the above method. I really hope its wrong.

Sophomore PSAT: 186 (I think 63 CR, 57 M, 66 W)
Junior PSAT: 179 (54 CR, 65 M, 60 W)
SATs in Junior year: 1940, 2090
SAT in Senior year: 2190. Lol I went from a 57 M in sophomore year to an 800 M in senior year.

@livelaugh7 what score did the method say that you received? I was also shocked because I thought that some of the answers that it said that I answered wrong were actually correctly answered. I don’t know, I hope that it was wrong, but my math score seems about right, my writing score seems maybe a little low, and my reading score seems a lot low. Did anybody get there actual scores yet and did they match with the above method? Thanks!

Sophomore: 199
Junior: 231

don’t worry too much about psat scores. I got a 210 sophomore year and scored a 2250 on the real SAT that spring. also, PSAT scores aren’t that important in the long run, unless you get national merit scholar.

Sophomore: 178
Junior: 202

@averagewhiteguy‌ The method said I got a 179 on it, and I got 18 wrong on the CR and I got 4 wrong on M and 8 wrong in W… which seems absurd. For example, I’m sure I got a graph question correct, but it says I got it incorrect. I haven’t gotten the actual scores yet.

I actually scored ~220 as a Sophomore. This year I took the PSAT and scored a 236, I think. My SAT score has not been released, sadly. Kinda sad.

How bad is a 179 then for a sophomore (first language: Arabic, if that means anything)

@averagewhiteguy I got a result of only missing two points total, one in writing and one in math…which also seems a little absurd but I don’t know how it would come up with answers if it wasn’t either the same every time or correct so fingers crossed it’s right

Agreed@crazycatdebater and @livelaugh7, a 179 is not bad at all for a sophomore, especially if you didn’t study. That puts you in the 87th percentile for juniors which means that you did better than 87/100 11th graders who took the test so nice job. I would say that if you are aiming for ivies and/or national merit, you should probably hit the books this summer lol as do I since I only got a 186 :expressionless: but yeah I would say we are in the same boat. So good luck studying this summer @livelaugh7 and don’t worry, our scores are fine. I know people in my grade who also get straight A’s in tough classes and got 150s-160s so your good.

Sop: 163
Junior: 193

I’m seriously about to die. I got a 195 (65+65+65) im a sophomore . I should have gotten a 68 on math but I misread two questions and put the wrong answer and they were so easy too!!! On writing I should have been more careful with the problems. But, when i first calculated my score I was like ooohhh a 68 on writing a 198 overall I miscalculated. WRONG. Of course :(

@averagewhiteguy‌ Thanks!! I’m just super worried that this 179 is so low that I won’t get accepted into the high school. Two of the girls that I know that got accepted got a 194 and a 209… so you know. Maybe the fact that I take hard courses will even that out? (even if I got a B+ in english last year and a B in APUSH…)

@calchong good job man, you have me beat. I got a 68 M, 65 W, 53 CR (fell asleep during the dolphin passage ended up omitting 10 lol. But seriously, you did a great job. And @livelaugh7, I think your good man and a B in APUSH, wow, I take that next year and I heard its really hard to get a B because the teacher is so tough. So good work. What did you end up getting on the APUSH exam, if you don’t mind me asking?

@averagewhiteguy‌ thanks!! you did really well yourself (although you prob dont want to fall asleep next year when you actually have shot at getting national merit HAHAHA). the dolphin passage also made me want to commit suicide, but what made me want to die even more were the vocab words… I don’t have a very strong vocabulary backing (not really taught vocab in 9th grade). However, i got almost all the literature questions right but maybe 1 or 2

Nice job @Calchong, I agree I should try to stay awake, but the night before the PSAT, I had a paper due in English the next day that I hadn’t even started yet (I know what a responsible student I am :D). Anyway, I ended up staying up until 1 am to finish it. Next year, I should probs get sleep before the test lol. But for the vocab, suprisingly, I answered all but 1 correctly on the test so I am pretty pleased there. And yeah, getting all but 1 or 2 wrong is fantastic, We got our scores back and I am pretty sure the highest in my grade (sophomore) was a 205 by an Indian kid, who is in AP Calc AB, where as I am only in Pre-Calc sigh. But he got an 80 on the math (surprise lol) and like a 60 on the reading so your 65 on the reading is amazing in my opinion. Way to stay awake and focused!!! ^:)^

Oh yeah, @Cachong, what state are you in? I am in PA so I think getting NM here shouldn’t be too difficult with a good amount of prep, since the cutoff is usually 217-218
