You’re going to Coachella brother? Do you happen to be a part of “Tent City”?

I’m 100% not camping this year. Last year, I totally broke like, 5 nails. But in all seriousness, I’m not camping - I’ve been there and done that, and it’s just too insane at Coachella. I got over the whole not showering and being surrounded by people in tiny 6x6 plots within a day. It was so hot and so crowded. This year, I’m totes staying at a resort with a freakin’ pool and a hot tub and clean toilets.

Also, I’m a girl and sometimes the boys get a little bit rapey if you know what I mean. Not full on desecrated-flesh or anything - just one too many drunken gropes.

Aye, I can understand that. If you need a nice group of people to party with hit us up on Facebook. Our group is called “Coachella Adoption 2011”.

@eyethink and meta
Oh noes, someguy wants to aspire to go above and beyond in life. Lets e-bully him and everyone defending him, because we know we can’t/won’t do it and hell, if I can’t get two Phds, no one can.

Relevant to the thread:
I’m doing English, because, really, if you can read and write, you can do anything. I want to go into medicine and possibly pharmacy school. After that, I would love to find Ms. Perfect, get married, have 2-4 kids and start a successful restaurantchain.

E-bully?! You’ve gotta be kidding me.

Show me exactly where I bullied anybody? Not once did I use an ad hominem attack against JetLogic or anyone defending him/her.

So before you lob accusations, please get your facts straight. But now that you’ve annoyed me…

The notion that if you can read or write you can do anything is specious at best and delusional at worst! Horatio Alger is a myth. You only need to read Evelyn Nakano Glenn’s Unequal Freedom for evidence that your claim is not founded on reality.

Heck, just look at what happened when those spineless Democrats failed to muster enough votes to end a filibuster on the Dream Act. You tell those well-deserving undocumented students that they can do “anything.” Laughable. Unless laws and stigmas are changed, certain groups will often bump up against a glass ceiling.

I’m extremely patriotic, to the point that it makes my liberal friends uncomfortable, but if you’re still buying the “American Dream,” well … caveat emptor.

“Horatio Alger is a myth.”
And what do you have to say about Bill Clinton?

since when was it a terrible thing to have aspirations? Isn’t this the land of doing anything and being anyone, isn’t this America?

Stop trying to spin the situation. I wasn’t bullying anyone.

Jesus…

It’s like you people can’t even fathom how somebody might even argue from this position–from a position which requires a little forethought in light of economic realities.

@asphyxic or whateverthehell - REALLY. im indian. i have tons of indian friends across the country and the world, and the mentality is all the same: make money whether you enjoy what you’re doing or not, THEN you can pursue whatever it is you like.

how did this thread turn so negative nuggets

Does your family own a seven eleven/ liquor store/gas station like every other Indian family?

lol no but my dad and uncle do own their own business…just not that kind of business.

slash - looks like we have another stereotyping noob from ucla :] are your boobs suffocating your face too?

My best friend is Indian and her dad owned gas stations, and the first day at UCLA I befriended an Indian girl. Before I asked her what her dad did for a living, I was like " Lemme guess, you’re dad owns a gas station."
Her reply, “yeah, how’d you know?”

“Lucky guess…”

@redoplease Daaaaang! Why so serious, panda bear? Or wait - they don’t have pandas in India. Somehow, ‘Why so serious, Royal Bengal Tiger?’ just doesn’t have the same oomph to it.

BUT AWWW THEY ARE SO CUTE ***OMG

[YouTube - Bengal Tiger Cub #3](<a href=“Bengal Tiger Cub #3 - YouTube”>Bengal Tiger Cub #3 - YouTube)

asphyxiac - sigh, that they are. i think im just pis*y because of finals.

LOL. People are taking this thread way too seriously, but hey, it’s entertaining.

Everyone needs to stop criticizing each other. I think that Goingmeta is allowed to have his opinions on the subject. It doesn’t mean that he is going to affect other people’s lives. He’s just reflecting on someone else’s choices from his own perspective. I think that’s valid. And I get where he’s coming from - I’m not a pessimist but I’m definitely a realist. You can have those aspirations and hope that you can achieve them while also knowing the odds are stacked against you.

And from what I’ve experienced, Redoplease is right about the Asian/Indian viewpoint. My dad gives me the money talk ALL the time (I’m Indian too). When I first told my family/parents that I wanted to go to law school, they flipped out because of course someone’s aunt’s brother-in-law’s cousin is an unemployed lawyer. But my mom is totally supportive of me and the rest of them will come around (hopefully haha). Honestly though, I don’t feel like the “money comes first” perspective is strictly Indian/Asian. The whole money=status=happiness idea is pretty universal in my opinion.

Haha collegeis4losers isn’t totally wrong. My parents don’t own any 7-11s/liquor stores/gas stations, but I know a lot of Indian people who own gas stations. You forgot hotels though lol.

^my cousin’s ex-boyfriend’s dad owns a hotel! hahahahaha thinking about that cheered me up considerably weirdly enough

Tell us what major you chose–Political Science
why did you chose this specific major–Hopefully to attend law school
what would you like to do with this degree?–Gain improvements on my critical thinking, analysis, and writing skills
We’re all UC transfers so which UC would you like to go to? --UCLA, but realistically, UCSD

@redoplease: Yeahhh hahahaha. My parents own a few too. Even though it isn’t their primary business, it’s so stereotypical lol. My dad freaks me out all the time because he tells me that it’s fine if I can’t find a job later, I can always run the hotels. Nooooooooooo! Seriously, that is like all the motivation I need to do well in school. :p

HAHAHA omg that would freak me the hell out too! there definitely are smaller truths to the stereotypes i guesss
where do u want to transfer to?

Really? You’re going to cite Bill Clinton as an example that Horatio Alger isn’t a myth? He’s the exception, not the rule. There are a ton of other people that faced his circumstances and did not become a Rhodes Scholar and get to have sexual relations in the White House.

Way to nitpick the entire premise of my contention lol.

Look I’m not here to tell people not to dream okay LOL. The premise of my post was that people SHOULD dream, just plan and do research so that you can realistically meet your objective.

Not some head in the clouds BS idealism.

If UCLA, has not taught you to be critically analytical of everything, then higher education has failed and there is no future.

With that I bid you adieu!

I am a Women’s Studies major. I get so much crap for this major from any random person that doesn’t know me its absurd. I picked women’s studies because frankly, the only thing that interests me otherwise are religious studies and that will put me in a cardboard box for the rest of my life. At least my major will put me in a shack.
Honestly though, it is a major that most people write off because its a waste or whatever bs sexist remark they have (no this is not majoring in shopping/beauty etc, thank you), but it is worthwhile. I want to hopefully either get involved in a women’s organization like NOW or work for NARAL. I am really interested in working in the middle east with women who are victims of rape and/or abuse or domestically of course. I would also love to work for Planned Parenthood, not as a doctor or but maybe in the administrative end. I really just want to do anything that involves reproductive rights or rape/abuse counsel. I definitely want to get my masters, perhaps a MSW, I’m not really sure in what specifically yet. It’s way to far off to make those plans. A doctorate degree would be amazing, but I really don’t think I can even think about anything past grad school.
