What will a bad GRE score do to me?

Hello all,

Probably like many of you I am in the process of applying to PhD programs. I finished my list off at about 20 schools. Luckily most of them I was able to receive a fee waiver for the application or I would not have been able to apply to that many.

My main question is what will a bad GRE score do to my application. I have talked to numerous schools. Some have said that the GRE plays no part in the application process and some have said that they examine the entire application packet.

I took my GRE yesterday for the second time and let me tell you the math portion was nothing like I had done in any of my practice tests for Kaplan. I had memorized the formulas for Circumference, exponents, and other math concepts I was taught throughout the class and I am sure that none of it was on the test. Did the NEW GRE become significantly more difficult? I scored a 149 on Verbal and a 142 on Math. I know those scores are bad but I want to know what it will do to my chances of getting into a school. I have come to accept that the likelihood of me being accepted into a top rate program is slim to none. I just find it hard to believe that a standardized test taken over 4 hours will decide your career fate.

Thanks to anyone who responds in advance!!
