I am planning on going to graduate school and get my PhD. However, I was wondering what kind of work will be available with my undergraduate degree, right out of college.

Also, do you recommend gaining experience through work and/or internships before I get my graduate degree for psychology or should I apply to schools for the semester following graduation?

I don’t think there’s too many people who are going the PhD route here, so you should take advice you get with a grain of salt.

I don’t see why you don’t just apply for schools right away AND look into what jobs you can get. You may not really have a choice.

Well it really depends on a lot of variables. How is your school ranked? What are your grades?

At my university (and a lot of others) psychology is possibly the biggest fluff major. It’s taken by athletes and people who really aren’t meant to be in college.

Your employment options will be few. 10 years ago I’d say HR but now there are HR degrees.

If you want a job than yes you need internships. Graduates in today’s economy getting jobs had internships.

Well, if getting into a PhD program right away is doable, given the tough economy it may be the easiest way to go. Those programs are tough to get into though unless you can pay for an unfunded one.

Talk to the career center at your school about jobs psych majors are recruited for.

law school?

o … nvm i see you want a phd

There are jobs available at state hospitals and community counseling centers if you have bachelor’s degrees in psychology. You should read Getting In: A Step-by-Step Plan for Gaining Admissions to Graduate School in Psychology. It goes into a lot of detail about applying psych grad programs.
