what will i get?

i want to go to penn state. its my #1 and rlly wanna go. im a minority if that helps. 102 W gpa 1810 SAT. after an appeal, what can i expect in terms of total aid package? I am OOS also.

Thanks

What is your EFC? How much can your family afford to spend each year?

Since you’re OOS, it’s likely that you won’t get a good FA package. Schools don’t usually cover the OOS costs for OOS students with FA - otherwise, why bother charging an OOS rate.

What minority are you?

Where else did you apply? What is your home state?

NY state
hispanic minority
above 3.75 UW
likely 7,000 to 10,000 per year my family can afford realistically at the maximum

Are you a junior or senior?

You need to find out what your EFC will be.

I don’t think being a minority helps at Penn St, but if it does, it does have a fair % of Hispanics.

That said…Penn St for not residents is about $40k. WE don’t know your EFC, but if you think your family can pay $7-10k per year, it sounds like the family income is too high for free federal aid (which wouldn’t pay much anyway).

Your main problem is that you are not a resident. Penn St is not going to give you $30k to go there. They probably will only offer you about $5500 in loans, maybe $2k in work study and the rest ($30k+) would not be covered.

This won’t be an affordable school for you. Again, OOS publics don’t have the funds to give to OOS student (except UVA and UNC) You need to find schools - either instate publics or OOS privates - that will give you aid.

mom2ck is right – Penn State is not going to give lots of $$ to an out-of-state student (and especially not one from NYS, since the school’s student body already includes tons of kids from NYS).

I hope that you are a junior and just starting to develop your list of schools so that you have time to research schools that you will be able to afford. You should be looking at SUNY schools and also at private schools that will give generous merit aid for a student with your stats.

Penn State may be your “dream” school, but the reality is that it is way out of your family’s price range.
