I've been wanting to go to UVA for pretty much all of my life, but with how tough admissions have become I'm a little scared that I have no shot at getting in. I'm a junior this year and starting to think about colleges more seriously.

Background:

-White male
-Out of state, but both parents are alums as well as most of my extended family. They were all from VA. They have held season tickets to football games for 20 years and make a yearly donation to the school.
-Currently have a 4.0 unweighted GPA (school doesn't weight)
-Have always taken the most challenging courses
-Class rank is around 20/420 = top 5%
-Taken 1 AP class (US Hist.) and received an A
-Currently taking 3 AP's this year and will most likely get 2 A's and a B
-Plan to take 2-3 AP's next year

-EC's aren't spectacular
-4 years of 2 different sports
-(when i graduate)
-4 years of Spanish club (officer for 2 years)
-History club
-Academic all-conference

-Took the SAT for the first time in January, still waiting on scores
-Expect to get somewhere around ~700 math, ~600-650 CR and writing

Do I realistically have a shot? Will the legacy improve my chances? What SAT scores would I need to have a decent shot at admission?

Thanks!

I think you’ve got a great shot. Your legacy status will be critical in your OOS consideration. If you get the SAT’s you anticipate, you should be fine. It’s good to be getting your proverbial ducks-in-a row now. Great class rank, thanks for posting it. Stay on course and you’ll be just fine. Best of luck.

Thanks for the encouragement. I love the campus, and really want to go there. I go to all of the home football games and love the school.

Any other opinions?

To be honest, your EC’s are fairly weak. I would suggest that you really take the bull by the horns and beef this up. Be proactive, get involved in the community, but be different, stand out. Take a major leadership role. “Officer” in the Spanish club is OK, but bland, very vanilla, does not stand out. History Club? Yawn. Do something neat and brag about it.
I’m gonna pm you.

Yeah, I know. I’m kind of lazy, and I know I need to step it up. I wish I would have started earlier. I will try to do lots of activities in the future.

Forgot to mention that I have about 30-40 hrs of community service and a part time job.

Yawn***Read my pm!

I think you are in good shape, and the ECs are very good except for volunteer stuff. Find some things to do this summer: mission trip, church mission weeks, and so forth.

A little curious, you have perfect As, and are only 20th in your class? Either that is one tough Junior class or your grade curve is a little easier than average. Even so, an A is an A, and you have nothing to worry about there.

I have all A’s on my transcript, I think the percentage is around 95-96 average. There are many students that average 98-100 at my school. I’ve always tried to take the most challenging classes I can handle.
