Before long it will be time to do the big pre college shopping trip. Just wondering what the clothing essentials are for college men right now??

why don’t you just where what you like? Don’t you already have a style that fits you?
Because theres those guys that dress really nice (collared shirts all the time)
But then there is those guys who dress chill but also presentable (t-shirts,jeans, some cool shoes)
Just have a mixture of casual and nice clothes, but really guys have it easy when it comes to clothing.
But it all depends on the type of person you are and what you are comfortable in. Make your own style.
And as long as you don’t wear parachute pants, I think you’ll be ok.
Oh and coming from a girl never wear clothes that looks like something an elementary school kid would wear!
I’ve seen it and it makes the guy look like a dork.

I care only about aesthetic, personally. So I would go for “I like X” rather than “My personality compels me to pick X.” You, of course, can do what you want.

That being said, I think that most people do not dress appropriately. So, if it were up to me, here’s what I would do:

1) Have some polos (any variety will do – I have some funky ones from A|X and some more mainstream ones from Brooks Brothers)
2) Have some button-down collared shirts (oxford collar)
3) Have some nicer shirts
4) Have some jeans
5) Have some pants – whether you want bright colors or just khakis is up to you

Plus a suit and tuxedo for more formal occasions. You do not need anything else, but I have a pair of sweatpants and a couple of tees that I wear when I’m not really going out or anything. As you can see, there is a great deal of flexibility in the clothes, but they are all appropriate and presentable.

^ Sorry, I should have mentioned that I’m the mom. S doesn’t think too much about things like this but I want him to get off on the right foot. His usual attire right now is tshirt or soccer jersey and cargo shorts. In colder weather he throws on straight leg jeans. Dress up is slacks and button down and maybe a v-neck sweater or sweater vest. For very dressy occasions he has a new black suit. What else does he need?

@sofaraway: Are you talking about sesame street shirts? I think I saw them at Rue 21 or Pac Sun.

A well dressed Freshman guy might wear:

Casual shirts
Polos
tshirts
cardigans
chinos
khakis
shorts
jeans
boat shoes
loafers
sneakers
flip flops
plaid anything
sweaters

Nothing. One can get by on minimal clothes.

It’s more an issue of what he wants. Does he work out? If so, he probably wants some sweats, track pants, or athletic shorts. Does he want lounge clothes? If so, pack some sweatpants.

But he doesn’t seem to need more than what he has now. If he’ll be walking, several pairs of shoes may be nice. At my college, by far the most common choice among males is boat shoes/Sperrys. But it’s really up to him – sneakers are of course also common, but far behind the boat shoes in terms of popularity.

it doesn’t really matter. Fit matters more than anything else. But I stick to relatively plain T’s (short or long sleeve, crew neck) or button ups, in dark colours, with jeans.

-good quality jeans, dark wash is always good because it can be dressed up or down, nothing too baggy, or too skinny, look for slim-boot cut styles that fit well
-comfy t-shirts, plain, think American Apparel, try to stay away from large brand names all over your clothing, great for everyday and for layering under button ups or sweatshirts
-a few polos, always classic
-sweaters/sweatshirts, for layering in the cold months, a couple of nice knit v-neck sweaters, a few zip-ups, etc.
-some button downs in a few different colors/stripe prints, can be left open over a t-shirt with jeans or can be buttoned up with khakis for something semiformal
-a couple of khakis/trousers for nice events
-a sports coat/blazer in case you need to go to something semiformal
-a suit, one would probably be enough
-sweats/old tees for working out
-running shoes, comfortable sneakers/shoes for every day (2 pairs should be good, perhaps some sneakers and topsiders), possibly a nice pair of sneakers/shoes that you would wear to go out, dress shoes, all-weather boots

guys have it so much easier than us girls :/

Don’t forget a tie or two! And a belt. Along with the obligatory school sweatshirt.

Well dressed freshman guy?

The guys at my school aren’t “well dressed” on a daily, going-to-class basis. When going out? Sure. But otherwise its just jeans/shorts and a t-shirt.

Please, do not buy skinny jeans.

@Johnson What school is this?

WashU. It’s a very laid back school
Sure, a few guys wear polos, but nothing fancy.

However, during pledging the fraternities often pick a day where the guys have to dress up (ie every thursday) in slacks and a jacket.

As a girl, I typically just wear jeans and a t-shirt when going to class. And I more than fit in.
I will say that almost no one wears sweatpants/pj’s to class. That I’m happy for.

A proper closet at my school would have:
A pair of Sperry’s or other boat shoes
Nice leather flip-flops
Pair of boots
Khaki pants/shorts
Colored chino pants/shorts (red, blue, white, yellow, pastel colors)
Seersucker shorts
Plaid shorts
Carhartt like pants
Polos (from basic white/black/navy to pastel colors)
Nice button-ups
some t-shirts (nice ones ranging from solid colored Southern Marsh ones to band shirts)
Croakies
Ties (bowties are best)
Nice brown leathern belt and black one
Sports coats/blazer
Tuxedo

2 pr jeans
T-shirts with political statements/satire, the more obscure the better. Preferably black.

What is this ‘well dressed’ stuff you speak of?

I like your style PKP

why thank you cabhax

Nice style PKP, although it seems heavy on the shorts. I own a pair of linen shorts and two cotton shorts, but nothing else other than full-length pants.

well, i have one pair of seersucker shorts, a pair of lobster red shorts, a pair orfblue chino shorts, 5 pair of khakis shorts, two plaid shorts, and a linen pair, I live in the south and i golf so i always wear shorts.
