What will your child be doing this summer (internship, job, volunteer work, taking courses, or relaxing)? Please provide details such as employer, hourly wage, and college major if you feel comfortable sharing that information.

I will get things started. My D just completed her freshman year majoring in computer science. She will be working as an intern at a local university research facility doing computer programming. Last summer she made $16/hr when she interned there, so I assume she will probably earn around $18-19/hr this summer. She will probably take off 2 weeks to go on vacation.

D is a high school senior.
Her move in day is exactly 2 months after she graduates.
She will spend 10 days on vacation and 1 week on church mission tripping building houses with Habitat. In between, she will spend a couple of weeks serving as our driver-- younger D has a camp in an inconvenient place to get to, so we are paying the older one a nominal amount to make our lives easier.

She may also volunteer in the church office.

D1 just finished her junior year and has a full time internship and won’t be home at all.
D2 just finished freshman year and is applying for jobs in our area and if she can’t find a job will be home too much

Mine will be working at a job he’s had for a couple summers.

D is a college junior. She sent out over 100 applications for internships. The interviews (about 10) and offers (about 3 so far) started coming about a week ago. She chose one she liked and has already started it. It’s more like a part-time job, and in a field she is interested in. I’m glad she’s happy, and more glad she has something productive to do over the summer.

My DS is about to graduate. And three weeks later he will begin his fulltime job!!!

^^ Likewise, D2 will graduate and 4 weeks later start her new full time job.

D1 will spend 4 weeks in Spain improving her Spanish language skills (among other things) then return home to do her 6 week rural medicine practicum for med school.

My D will be graduating from HS next month. She plans on taking some college courses at a local CC before starting UC Davis in the Fall.

D1 finishing first year in college will be home in 2 weeks. Two jobs, three summer classes.
D2, finishing sophomore year in hs in 3 weeks. One job, high school softball (a summer sport in my state)

D3 (finishing soph year as music performance major) will be participating in three music festivals and learning to cook something other than eggs and pasta in anticipation of moving into an off campus apartment.

D2 will graduate with a double degree in photography and literature. She does not know how to operate an espresso machine but will probably work at the same place she has during school vacations as she begins her full time job search.

D1 is graduating from college, and has a job lined up that does not start until later in July. We were just on the phone, and she was musing over what to do with her free time. She is considering volunteering with a program where she was a paid teacher over a few previous summers, and also helping with a political campaign I am working on until she leaves town for her job.

D2 is a graduating senior from high school. We will go on a family vacation, then pack to move back to the US. She will have 6 weeks to hang out with old friends and explore NYC. I am hoping it will be a happy summer for her. She may take some dance classes in the city. It will be a nice treat for her.

S1 just completed his third year in college. He’ll be home four days before heading to American Samoa to do research for NOAA. S2 is finishing up his sophomore year in HS. He will be with his dad on a business trip after school end (my husband is in professional baseball), then he heads to cross country camp for four or five days before joining me on a trip to my folks in SC. We’ll also fit in a college visit or two along the way.

Happykid graduates with her AA this month, and starts at her new university in late August. She’s on call at two local venues, and will be on call at a third as soon as the paperwork processes. Mostly general stage-hand stuff, some specific lighting design and board op. Pay ranges between $10 and $25 per hour depending on the venue and the specific gig. Also some unpaid lighting gigs for friends at various venues.

In August plans a three week trip to Europe with friends, fully paid for with money earned over the past year. This summer’s money is for books & other expenses in the coming school year.

I can’t believe this is my kid. I don’t remember ever being that well organized!

DS finishing freshman year. Will be home for a month before leaving for an 8-week intensive course in a computer systems - something not offered at current school. Back home for 2 weeks and then back for sophomore year. Planning on internships after this summer; this course should make him more employable - at least we hope so!

Mine (rising junior) got a job on college campus. Housing and one meal will be provided, it takes care of about half the summer. It’s basically a glorified gopher job, with aspects that fit in reasonably well with his major. I’m very happy he’s employed and also happy that we will get him for part of the summer, especially as he’s off to Jordan next year!

I vividly remember my summer after my sophomore year. It was the first summer I lived in an apartment on my own and first summer with my first serious boyfriend. Lots of growing up!

siemom:

The course won’t hurt with the job search but might not help so much either. Hopefully he’ll do a paid software development internship next summer (between 2nd and 3rd year and again between 3rd and 4th year), preferably at a reasonably known company, and that’ll definitely help with the employment prospects.

My son is just finishing up his 1st yr and has an 8 week internship lined up with a Judge in County Court. His college is giving him a $3300 grant. He will also work the part time job at Marshall’s he has had since summer after Jr. yr. in high school.

DO(nly) will be home in 2 weeks and after having her ACL reconstructed, plans to return to her school where she has a summer job that will pay her plus provide room and board on campus. She did the same job last summer and loved it.

D2 opted not to apply for colleges for this fall fall. After graduation, he plans to work full time on his Eagle Scout project until he completes it (his birthday is in September). It involves setting up a non-profit and he’ll be working with lawyers and accountants. I hope he will choose to apply to colleges for the following year. I hate to see those excellent SAT and AP scores go to waste.

D3 is finishing up 10th grade. He will take Driver’s Ed and help his brother out on his project.

S2, finishing second year, will come home and work at the summer job that he and S1 have had for several years. S2 has been alloted a stipend to stay for one summer at his University to do research. Very difficult to convince a kid to spend a summer in a hot city when home and job are on the coast, just steps from the beach.
