What would an average sophomore...

Is Math Methods on the same level of difficulty as Calculus BC? Our school has the following course:
IB Math Methods (HL) - Calculus 3 & 4, whatever that means...
I guess that Mathematics HL.

My school doesn't offer anything besides IB, so I'm actually not sure what the AP equivalent would be. I think, though I'm not positive, that Math SL is the equivalent of AP Calc AB plus some other non-calc things (seeing as it's a two-year course), and Math HL would be AP Calc BC plus some other esoterically advanced topics that I, a lowly SL'er, can't even begin to imagine. Don't quote me on it, because I really can't say for sure, but that's what I'd assume.

Thanks, just trying to figure out what classes my school has :)

He's not a "noob". Algebra is still good, he still ahead by a year of average students. Don't tease him.

No, in 8th grade good colleges expect you to take at the very least -- Calculus AB.

GEOMETRY is the norm, alg II for smarter kids, precalc for absolutely briliant kids.

"Most people take Geometry and others who are smarter take Algebra II or Pre-Calc, or even AP Calc (and might I just add those people are soooo lucky to take them as sophmores!!)"

:)

"Algebra II is what most people take. However I do know kids who take pre-Calculus as sophomores, and even a kid who took Calculus as a hs freshman. I don't think it would especially help with admissions, although it shows you're very good at math everyone learns the same thing in the end anyway, just at different times."

That's not true. The kids who take Calc so early and want to continue will do multivariable calc, number theory, etc., something many kids lose interest in after one college year of calculus.

"HS in middle school classes+block schedule+summer school."

No summer school for me. The recipe is simple: distance education (learn it online).

Anyone here going to take AP Stats sophmore year? I am but I really don't know if its a math class. According to my school it is an elective.

I'm taking AP Statistics next year, and I'm taking Stat at a local college right now. It's pretty easy and boring... I haven't seen any math yet in the course. But it should have some math.

Statistics is the "science of analyzing and interpreting data and then making conclusions and making decisions based on those conclusions" or something like that.

At my school all top/higher level sophomores took Geometry (various levels, adavanced & basic, but really the same stuff, only difference was basic did fewer proofs & had the better teacher-- I got put in there due to schedule issues). At my friends schools (still in the same general area as mine) she'll take Algebra II her sophomore year- same for my cousin. (my cousin's homeschooled, so if that makes any difference) I think it depends on how the school has the math cirriculum set up.

Algebra II is what sophomores here take . . . people get made fun of if they take Geometry in sophomore year. But yeah, the reason is that people had to apply to get into my school so it usually ends up that way.

Yea, I'm taking it, but at the same time as Pre-Cal.

At our school, I think it's a math class, but a lot of the people who take it already have 4 math credits, so I don't know how that works.

It really depends on the school. For example, if I went to my public school, I'd be taking Pre-Cal for soph year. But I go to a private school that goes Algebra I, II, Geometry, and I'm taking Geometry. My other friend is a year behind in the "regular" sequence and she'll be taking Geometry as well, though she hasn't taken Algebra II yet, as I have.

Most schools still go with the sequence Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, and I'm guessing most sophomores would take Algebra II. It really depends where you start in middle school.

To add to my earlier post, I'm taking it as an elective. I think my school considers it as a math course/math elective.

Shravas, I am doing stats with pre calc too. I am doing it as an elective.

Sophomore Math (my school)
Algebra 1- 40%
Geometry- 45%
Algebra 2- 15%
Pre Cal- >1%

i would say most people take algebra 2 but i'm gonna take trig/math analysis since i took algebra 2 durin freshman year

a lot of my friends are gonna take math analysis/pre calc
