Currently I am a student at U of M with a lot of room for more classes and I can’t decide on a minor(s). Here are some of my thoughts on potential minors that I am interested in:
Mathematics: I like math and after prereqs, I will only need to take two more classes… but is a math minor useful is any way?
Something business: I liked econ, but other than that, don’t have much experience with business… I think I’d like the classes and my guess is that it would be useful?
IOE: This could be good because furthers my knowledge in business aspect of engineering
Spanish: a lot of credits I would have to take, generally like spanish, but I heard the classes are a lot of work and not that helpful
MechE: I heard this is useful and I have a general interest
Materials Eng: I’m interested, would this be helpful?
Climate and Space Sciences in Engineering: minor I have most interest in, what type of jobs would this give me an advantage for though?
Any thoughts appreciated, thanks!! I know there are a lot.
Minors have negligible effects on your career prospects. Minor in something because you enjoy it not because it will help you get a job. The skills you learn from those classes could be beneficial but again it’s all up to you.
All of these minors are things that I think I would enjoy, so my way of narrowing down what to pursue is to see what would be most useful
Have you considered computer science? Would this require too many additional courses? Just off the top of my head it would seem that a lot of subjects, including environmental engineering, need to make use of computers.
Thanks for your response! I have considered it and I took an introduction to programming class last semester, but I don’t think that’s for me. I didn’t mind the class, but I only like programming in moderation.
Maybe reverse the scenario, do your actual degree in mech/mati/another tangible eng and your minor in enviro. If you have too much time on your hands in your present degree can’t you just get ahead?
I am with dad though, why all eng type kids aren’t doing as many comp courses as possible is a bit of a surprise. . What does your EE job look like?
most likely consulting or maybe a non government organization
