I attend Communtiy college and none of the organizations there seem to interest me. Should I form my own organization or Join a community organization? Forming my own organization would be hard for me because I’ve never been in a leadership position, I have a disability that makes it difficult for me to communicate, and i would have to devote more time that I might not have to the organization. Some of the Communtiy organizations that interest me charge a membership fee which might not be very appealing to me. I have a strong interest in science and there use to be an energy club and American chemical society club at my school but both went inactive. I wish my school offered a Biology, Environmental, or other area related to science club. I talked to the student life person at my school and she doesn’t seem very helpful because I mentioned those concerns about forming my own organizations and all she says is “I can do it”. I would need some assistance for looking for someone to help me while being in charge of an organization. My school does offer leadership training but don’t know if that’ll help or not. Please help.
How about a general science club? This might attract enough people to sustain a group. All you have to do at first is figure out if there is enough interest in your club. Maybe set up a meeting and put up notices including your contact info. Be prepared with some possible interesting activities to discuss that the club could do together. Make a contact list of those that show interest and continue to advertise future meetings. Dont worry about the leadership part, others in the group may be willing to take on those roles.
@NYmommabear thanks for the idea. I’ll try it.
Could a general science club do events or activities related to the environment even though environmental science is not one of the main sciences?
If you’re the club founder, your club can sponsor anything it wants.
My daughter was the president of a community college club. Getting people to come to a new club is hard work at commuter schools. The students have jobs and other responsibilities after class. She got permission from professors to stop by the last few minutes of class to advertise her club to students in related classes. At her particular school, there were a lot of hoops to jump through as well. For example, the student senate required the club to have training in diversity and inclusiveness and the procedures for managing club funds. The training was free, but finding someone from the club to go wasn’t always easy. It took a couple months to become official, though the faculty advisor signed them up for room reservations unofficially until all the steps were done.
