Our kids will live in a world that is very different from today's. Re-regulations, new public work programs, possible expansion of other entitlement programs, government controlled health insurance ect. will create a new supply/demand in the job market. Accounting, especially auditing, and proabably legal careers would be in high demand. But that's my own take, what's yours?

I believe in choosing profession based on passion / interests. If history/politics is not one of them, then legal career might not be a fit. Interest / success in science might lead to one carrier, desire to lead / organize to another, love to work with children to third. That is why it is important to explore, volunteer, shadow, get involved. I agree that job market needs to be considered. For example, there are options for somebody who loves biology, and even though their first choice is Marine Biology, it might not be the best, since there are hardly any jobs in this field.

i agree with seeing connections between fields- sustainability is hot.

Changes in tax laws keep CPAs very busy!

I read an article recently that said nursing, education and government work are going to the most needed. Government work as many long term baby boomer employees are retiring. In education math and science teachers are definitely needed.

Bankruptcy judge.

Ditto hunt! though law on the whole would concern me with lots of legal work being outsourced.

Anything to do with health care, I see business students getting background there as there will be various opportunities.

I would add accounting and nursing to the list of the hot careers. But following one's passion is even more important for success in life than chasing the next hottest field, IMO.

forensic accounting. Looking for the bad numbers after the fact.

think blood spatter for numbers

Nursing, and anything related to education. There will be thousands of baby boomers retiring from teaching and administrative careers, and precious few folks entering the profession. Allied health professions (speech pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy), pharmacists (to dispense all of the Prozac).

Not related to the bailout, but my thoughts on the future have not changed.

I think following and developing your strengths and interests are more important that necessarily aiming for a particular occupation per se. None of us can really predict the future job market, it's likely our kids careers will take may turns, and one's strengths, talents and skillsets can be morphed into different occupations.

I do think it's worthwhile to consider how so many occupations, or parts of them, can and therefore will be be sent overseas. Those are unlikely to be ones our kids can do in the future.

Actually, in our kids' working lifetimes, there will likely be new careers that don't even exist now.

Actually the current trend is for jobs coming back from overseas in some occupations.

Science, especially engineering will still be needed to help build and figure out solutions as we go forward.

The thing that's great about America is that we have the resources and intellectual capacity to reinvent ourselves. I agree with OP that things will be different for our children, and I take comfort in the knowledge that things may actually get better as time goes on -- because that is a realistic option in this country.

"Actually the current trend is for jobs coming back from overseas in some occupations."

Okay telemarketing but I think that was more of a temporary media- hype than a global trend. Are there any other occupations?

I agree with Thumper, I think we can't even imagine yet a lot of what our kids might be doing.
