What would your choice for a pre-med program with the follwoing options?
1. UCI (Full Ride)

Cost of attendence for the following schools is almost the same:
1. UCLA
2. UCB
3. UPenn
4. Yale
5. UCSD
6. USC
7. Duke

Are you receiving scholarships/aid from those privates or are you out of state? Because you're saying UCLA and Yale would cost the same amount

If you're dead-set on pre-med nothing is wrong with UCI and you wouldn't have to stress about loans (unless you're parents are paying). It might be slightly less difficult to get better grades at private schools than public schools, but seeing as how you got into such great schools, I would think you have the aptitude to succeed at UCI. However, it would be hard for me to turn down schools like Yale, Penn, and Duke regardless of cost.

I am from California and did not get any scholarship from UCLA/UCSD. USC offered me presedential scholarship(half tution). UCB Alumini Scholarship semi finalist which may pay $1000/- per year(if I get it). My EFC is around $19,000. The two ivies, and Duke offered me financial aid around $25000. The cost of living in dorms, and the student fee etc would add up close to $20000 at UCLA or UCB or at USC with the presedential scholarship, similar to what I would be paying at the private institutions. Having a difficult time taking a decision. Not sure how difficult it would be to get good grades at the private institutions. Is it worth committing $80000/- over the next four years for the name of the school when I am getting a free ride from UCI. Trying to get views/opinions from fellow CCers.

Yale. I didn't apply there because I didn't want to be put in the position of possibly having to move to the other side of the country. But if I did get in, which is such an amazing accomplishment, I'd take that offer.

UCI (Full Ride)

VERY VERY hard to pass up the others, but I say UCI. Saving so much money is going to be helpful when you need to shell out even more money for med school, and UCI pre-med is good too. You'll definately have a lot of opportunities for research at UCI. Since it seems that you're a very high caliber student, you'll be successful wherever you go.

Are your parents willing to pay the estimated 19,000? If they are willing to pay that much will you have any debt going to one of the ivies? If not then i would go to yale.

UCI for sure. free school? man reminds me of elementary school. trust me, if you see the amount you shell out for the other schools, you'll want to go to UCI.

Yale; the benefits will surely outweigh the costs eventually.

You'll have success wherever, no doubt. But I think there's more to Yale, Penn, and Duke than a name. You'll be surrounded by a different caliber of people and education. But then again, I don't know how those schools are for pre-med.

Yea, a different class of people back east. Not a bunch of low lifes like us. I guess the ones that come out west to schools like UCLA, UCB, and USC are the eastern rejects. Go Yale! That's where Bush went.

I'd say Yale if your parents are really okay paying that all that money. Sure the cost up front will be a lot, but in the whole scope of things Yale will bring you so much more money in the future than UCI will, even though it is free initially.

With that being said, Yale is a crazy school from what I hear, I'd only go there if you were ready for a challenge. Goodluck.

"Yale will bring you so much more money in the future than UCI will, even though it is free initially."

it's the med school that's going to bring him/her money, not the undergrad school. the undergrad school doesnt matter as long as it can get you into a good med school....

hmm...
