What would you do if.....

you didn't know what race you were whilst applying to college. WOULD you declare yourself an URM? Because if race really doesn't matter in our society, then why should we have to write it on applications? If all races are equal, then whats the need in writing race... should I state that I have brown hair also?

well in college all races and peoples are not equal in admissions decisions, so it doesnt matter

Because, for some crazy strange reason, the U.S. has decided that in order to "right wrongs" from years and years ago, colleges must give some races an edge over others.
IMO- two wrongs does not make a right, but this is just going to turn into an AA argument.

For the schools that aren't pro-AA, they collect race information for stats purposes (are there any schools like that?)

i'm not trying to start an AA argument, more of a discussion on why they would need to keep STATS.... seriously, if it's important enough to keep stats on then they are obviously identifying it as a DIFFERENCE... yet they pledge that they are EQUAL-opportunity. men and women are DIFFERENT so there should be stats kept, along with SAT scores and income.... but we all know hair color doesn't matter, so why should skin color?

Yes, UCs only use race for statistical purposes, as do other prestigious universities. You can find that out on schools' admissions website.
