I have decided to take a year off from college after finishing HS. It has been several months now since I have finished school and now I find that I have absolutely nothing to do at home. I wanted to get a job in a large firm (such as goldman, lehman, etc.) since i will start my undergraduate next sept. However, it has been impossible to even talk to someone from recruiting, since they dont just give out interviews.

If you were in my position what would you do? BTW, I am going into the business field mainly finance.

I am taking a year off right now, but for different reasons, I am gaining Texas residency to go to McCombs at UT next year. All I do is work, 55 hrs a week, makin mucho dinero. Thats all u should be doing right now also, IMO.

I have been refered to peace corps, but i did not like the volunteering aspect of it since I wanted to get some money during this year off. However, I think that I will apply to it anyway and see if any business programs are offered this year since both SEO and INROADS wont help me in anyway. Is there any other programs that i should be aware of?

I have already taught myself college-level economics, basic accounting, and finance. I have also began to look at annual reports and other technical indictors to see what companies I would be investing in after I quit my job as a stockbroker at Wall St. I ran out of ideas of what to do and I think a job in the business area at the moment would be best.

If I was given the choice, I'd travel too, and if you get the chance, maybe to a third world country and work with the poor, which is someting i'd like to do myself, but i dunno when i'll get teh chance for a year off :(

I just spoke with peace corp and it seems they require 27 months of service (yikes). I dont think I can devote more than 7 months in my position. Also, I would travel but I dont have the money to do so. Any more opinions would be appreciated :)

I would travel. Actually I would personally participated in a field school archaeological dig. But that's probably not something a potential businessy person would be interested in. Nonetheless if you have the money and support travel is always a great option.

Both Peace Corps and AmeriCorps dont have programs that are for business majors. Well actually Peace Crops has one but you have to be a graduate (which I am not), I called them to check about it and they confirmed that I cannot join. Nevertheless, I would volunteer as long as I get some business experience.

I just took a year off school. I came back home, worked full-time, and then spent the last three months in Northern Namibia teaching mathematics. Volunteer opportunities beyond AmeriCorps and Peace Corps are out there.
