What would you major in if

what would you major in if you wanted to be a screenwriter? there’s no creative writing program that i am aware of like there is at columbia, and I wanted to do something a bit more useful than english. so, what do u suggest? ;]

There is a creative writing program at Brown, it's just there are multiple ways of doing it. It usually culminates with a capstone project

The creative writing faculty includes world renown writers like Paula Vogel, Carlos Fuentes, and John Edgar Wideman.

Screen-writing alumni include Todd Haynes (Far from Heaven), Doug Liman, and others. I have friends who've gotten jobs at the daily show, the simpsons and MTV right out of college. Most of them concentrated in Modern Culture and Media,

Something else of interest may be the ivy film festival, a major high profile festival that happens at Brown every year with a screenplay component.

so it really doesn't matter what you major in because in the 6th or 7th semester you can join the honors/capstone project if you get accepted?

I think someone may have mentioned this already, but:

<a href="http://www.browndailyherald.com/news/2004/09/22/CampusNews/Literary.Arts.Concentration.Planned.To.Begin.In.Fall.2006-726562.shtml%5B/url%5D">http://www.browndailyherald.com/news/2004/09/22/CampusNews/Literary.Arts.Concentration.Planned.To.Begin.In.Fall.2006-726562.shtml</a></p>

If you're a senior now, then by the time you have to declare your major, Brown actually will have a creative writing concentration. At least I hope they will, because I want to major in CW too.

that would b awsome ;]

purpletransience - what did u put down for ur main area of interest on ur app?

You mean intended majors? If I had to pick one it would have been linguistics, if it was three (maybe I'm thinking of Stanford's app—they all look alike) I also would have included math and classics. All of which are true. At least, I have the courses to justify them; I'm probably not going to take that many more classics courses, though, I'm starting to get sick of it.

But still, don't worry about the lack of a creative writing option as of yet. If you want to be a writer of any sort, you want as broad an education as you can get, if for no other reason than to practise all kinds of writing and to view the world (which presumably you'll be writing about, in some way) from as many perspectives as possible. Obviously math and natural sciences aren't going to help /that/ much, and I personally never want to take a lit analysis course again. But there's still departments of history, sociology, psychology, anthropology, political science, international relations, and American civilization, to name a few.

Take a look at the courses that each of those departments offer. See if anything sounds interesting to you, and then just pick one. It doesn't matter that much what you write on your app—they accept you to Brown, not the department.
