What you leave behind...

I have a ragdoll cat. If I end up going away to college, I will miss her terribly (more than any persons, haha) and I'm sure she will miss me (I'm hers). Anyone else distressed about leaving their pet behind for 4 years?

pet for 4 years? how bout friends for 10 years? family of your entire life?

Honestly, I miss my cats more than I miss my parents and friends combined. After all, I can talk to them whenever I want -- I can't talk to my cats.

It was SO HARD to leave my cats, as well as my family. I've always grown up with cats, so I understand how difficult it is. I have pictures of the 3 of them, as well as my family, right by my bed, and it's nice to just ask your parents how you're pets are doing every once and awhile, to know they're ok. Look at it this way...you'll be home for thanksgiving/christmas/summer most likely, and will see your pets then...and when 4 years are up they're all yours!

Sorry...I love my cats and I'm a dork.

It was very hard to leave my dogs... more than leaving my friends or parents. You can always call, email, write humans, but animal friends can't communicate long distance. And they can't understand why you have to go.

It's totally normal to feel sad about leaving feline/canine friends behind.

Your pets miss you too! Our dog goes into our son's bedroom and looks around for him. Maybe you could make a video of yourselves the next time you are home and your parents can play it occasionally for your pets. Our dog definitely watches TV. (Yeah, I'm a dork, too)

I miss my dog more than I miss my family. I have my mom send me pictures of him each week... its the seemingly stupid things in life that I enjoy the most. One of those is my dog. He's too cute and he makes me smile everytime I see him. Him and flowers... going outside on a spring day when all the flowers are in bloom just makes me so happy.

... yeah... I'm wierd. No need to point it out

it's not weird to miss your pets! your relationships with them can be just as strong as those with your family members or friends.

it's not weird at all. I mean you can call your family and friends, IM them, e-mail them, etc. But you can't do those things with your pet. I will miss my dear Zoey more than anything. Granted, she's already old, and I'm not sure she'll even live through 5 more years (senior year + 4 years undergrad). She's been my faithful friend and companion, and I don't know what I'll do if I find she's passed while I'm far away and can't visit :(
