Hi guys,

So many of us are going to Berkeley, either as new or returning students. I thought we could all contribute and add a few things one needs to bring to their dorm.

Pretty much, post just a few things you would need to your dorm and let it keep rolling till we have a sizable list :)

So here are a few things I would need:

Alarm clock
Laptop
Swim Wear
Pillow + Sheets

Why do you need swim wear?

Mini-fridge
Blanket/comforter
Printer

Melatonin and headphones.

Television - you are paying for cable, not bringing a TV means you are wasting money
Video game consoles - you might not have a lot of time to play them but it is better they collect dust in your dorm than at home.

toothbrush + toothpaste!

i thought they said no mini-fridge.

apparently, nobody cares about that rule.

if you have your own fridge, why pay to rent theirs?

You can bring your own fridge, they can’t do anything about it or they don’t do anything about it. I have been using a hand-me-down minifridge my parents bought for my sister to use at UCLA for the last two years.

Yes, you do get cable in your dorm.
If you are bringing a TV (preferably an HDTV as it takes less space), bring an antenna too as Berkeley has very good signal for HD locals

lots of patience and self-respect … for dealing with your roommate :|

nail clippers. seriously.

someone please bring a laser tag set and contact me. i want to play Berkeley laser tag.

I’d recommend not bringing a TV. It’s way too distracting. If you want to watch TV, everything is online except sports (and some of it is too, with ESPN 360.) Video game consoles are fun, but can kill your grades, and that’s from somebody who never played video games before either.

^Not quite true. Being able to watch TV online is going to be just as distracting as watching TV on a TV and then you’re not necessarily going to have access to everything. And then there is also the factor about how you are wasting money each month by not bringing a TV.

Leaving ones video game console(s) at home is not an effective way to avoid video games. Some of my friends have tried this (or their parents had forced it on them) and it was completely ineffective as several people on their dorm floor were playing video games or computer games much of the time and it sucked them in. Also, if you are naturally a gamer, not having a video game console isn’t going to keep you from gaming, you will just end up as a PC gamer. There are several NoCD-hacked games on DC++ which makes this very possible. Video games don’t necessarily hurt your grades unless you let them. I have a premed MCB BMB Track 1 friend, who literally plays DotA or various other computer games all day long and maintains a 4.0 to this day (It has been four semesters thus far).

Bottom line, if you are studying when you need to be studying, good, when you don’t need to be studying, it doesn’t really matter what are you doing.

Yea I think TV is a good idea. It gives you something to do in your spare time. However, I don’t recommend bringing in video game consoles. You can still go and play games on your pc, but gaming consoles (like playstation, xbox, etc) can take up some space and can get easily stolen (I already had like 4 friends who got their gaming consoles stolen). Unlike TV, they’re portable and easy to carry, and Berkeley’s police isn’t top-notched, so don’t bring it unless you’re planning to use it often and put it in a safe spot.
Gradewise, I guess it really depends on you. I have friends who both kept their grades up and also suffered from video gaming. It depends on how naturally smart you are and how much you need to study in order to get the materials.

^it really depends on how careful you are. If you are cautious in making sure your dorm door is closed when you are not there, you should be safe. Also, it is a good idea to leave it in a cabinet drawer whenever it is not in use. This keeps it out of the public eye.
