What you need to get into Santa Barbara

You don't need a crazy high GPA or amazing SAT/ACT scores. I finished high school with a 3.92 GPA but when I turned in my application it was a 3.82. My SAT score was a 1600 and my ACT only 24. (I should have taken them more than once and maybe looked into it a little more haha). My essays were pretty good, I wrote them in my AP English class and got a decent score on them. I was involved in my school's Biotechnology program and Aca Deca. And I took nine AP classes and passed only half. UCSB was NOT my first choice but I am so blessed that I got in. The point of this is that you don't have to be extremely smart and involved in everything, you can be pretty smart and have decent scores. I hope anyone who applies here doesn't get discouraged because some people really are smart and got it.

I was accepted with a 1600 SAT and a GPA of 3.86 (should have been higher, but my teacher of records when I was homeschooled gave me low grads in two classes that I should have gotten an A in). Also none of my classes were honors/AP, my school didn’t offer them. I do have over 200hrs of committee service hours plus I had a summer job. Hope it helps.

Well done by the way!

I consider myself extremely lucky that I got into UCSB. I had a 3.6 UC GPA, 26 ACT. But I was involved in Community services (empowering ethnic minorities) that were related to my major and I wrote my essay about that. I held two leadership positions. SO IT IS NOT ALL ABOUT GRADES AND TEST SCORES.

one advice for filling out the UC APP : try to sell yourself as a PACKAGE. Connect your community service, EC’s, leadership, major and your personal statement together. UCSB is looking for well-rounded people, grades and test scores are only 50% of their admission process.

I really hope I get into UCSB as well. I have a 4.12 GPA and possibly 1800+ on the SAT or 26 on the ACT but my essays are going to suck because my EC’s have nothing to do with my major.

What do you mean by your EC’s?

@shelbeyroukey EC’s = extracurriculars.

Okay that’s what I thought. Your EC’s don’t even have to be mentioned in it. I talked about my sisters and how they’re my inspiration and what not. Have you viewed what the personal statement prompts are?

I’m going to be applying to UCSB in the fall, and I’d like to know how to receive a fee waiver. But idk if I’ll be accepted, I finshed Junior year with a 3.77 GPA and got a 1690 on My SAT and a 20 on my ACT. I’m involved in community service at my school (interact club) and took five AP classes (and the tests). Idk, can someone help me out here.

I’m applying to UCSB soon but I have no idea if I have “enough” to be accepted. A bit of assurance from some seasoned alumnis would be much appreciated. I had 3.4 (3.9 weighted) GPA coming into junior year with all honors/AP classes, but the first semester of junior year I tanked and had a B/C average with an F in English 3 Honors. The semester after and senior year I got all As. My SAT is 2150.

I was active in chess club, had a summer job teaching engineering concepts, have 150 hours of community service, and wrote and published a novel (that’s in Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Booksamillion etc.). But I don’t know if that’s enough to carry the abortion that was my first semester of junior year. Halp.

The UC’s don’t use freshmen or senior grades in the GPA calculation. They focus on 10th and 11th grades for the GPA but will look at all four years for the A-G requirements.

shelbyroukey: Was 3.92/3.82 your UC GPA (that is, only soph and jr grades weighted), or your total, unweighted GPA?

I’m worried if I will get in, 3.0 UC GPA and 31 ACT, I’m in the same boat with everyone else who is wondering.
