did he get in trouble, what of the kid?

The kid's lawyer dropped him lol
He deserved what he got, so I'm happy that even his crazy ham of a lawyer wouldn't even take his case.

^ lol, i agree

I hope they got fired. Tasering a defenseless, unarmed, detained student 6 times...who the hell do they think they are? Any more than 3 and they were supposed to call for medical help.

I know a law prof from my school USC, Ironically, takes the case.

hahaha it's the USC vs. UCLA rivalry on a whole new level

He deserved it.

****ing dumbass, my question isnt whether they should have done it, but why they didnt taser him more.

I even remember the video, screaming like a little girl...

Everyone involved still needs to be fired. LAPD already has a reputation for being abusive and stuff, they don't need more bad publicity. I'd go so far as to fire the LA police chief for not doing everything in his power to express discontent on this matter. I don't care if he deserved it or not, they grabbed his arm first, they're lucky they didn't grab my arm, if they did all hell would have broken loose.

UCLA police =/= LAPD... right? I mean police guarding the library? Security guards, yes, police? I don't think so...

Nice spiel about the LAPD. Can we get back to talking about UCLA police again?

the UCPD (i go to cal, it's the same type of cops) are serious dicks. These guys don't have much better to do than to harrass students and bust citizens smoking a little cannabis on campus. They tend to forget that they're SERVING us to PROTECT us, not out to punish us for a few moral indiscretions every once and a while.
But it was really effed up what those guys did, they had no reason to bug the guy, he was leaving the library, and they tazed him for no reason.

Whatever. I say fire the entire UCPD from ground up. Just fire the whole damn department. They're all responsible for condoning this kind of behavior.

wow, guess we have some people who think tasering, especially at that level is painless

suureeeee.... if yo don't think it would hurt, and hurt a lot...you are a fool

I know we're going back down the path that many other threads have covered in great detail already, but I just can't stand statements like these. I am seriously worried about our generation - we have no work ethic, no sense of personal responsibility. We expect everything to be taken care of for us, and for everyone else to pander to our desires - and of course, we can do no wrong :(

The police are not here to "serve" you in the sense that you mean - they are here to protect the public to the best of their ability AND to enforce the laws of the land. "Moral indiscretions" - lol are you serious? So I guess the vast majority of people who smoke pot do it on accident "every once in a while"....
And you know what? Even if they do, why the hell do you think that they should not be held responsible for breaking the law? Do you also complain when you get a speeding ticket?

And as to the first comment, I would assume you say that because of some police TV show like CSI or 24 haha. If you can't understand that you know nothing of actual police tactics and regulations, which are not (as much as some members of the public would like to believe) based on the TV shows, then you clearly have some growing up to do.

Please people, think rationally and not based on the emotionally charged and driven media foolishness.

Okay...

futurenyustudent: UCPD is not the same thing as LAPD. For one, UCPD is a state bonded police force. Firing the entire organization because of the indiscretion of one or even a few officers is about as effective a solution as firing all of the employees of Sony if your Playstation 3 doesn't run right when you get it out of the box-- it's cutting butter with a chainsaw.

punkdudeus: Smoking marijuana is still, the last time I checked, illegal. Whether or not you believe that it should be legal or not (I have my opinions, and they tend to lean on the side of libertarian), the police are still doing their jobs. Nobody forces you to smoke marijuana, but somebody forces them to stop you from doing it. You should be glad that the punishment they eke out these days is far lighter than what they did in the first half of the 20th century, and what they still do in Japan. In Japan, it's a felony to have even a single joint, and is punishable by many years in prison.

Everyone else: The student RESISTED a police officer's request. Do not forget that he, from the very start, was belligerent. He knew that you had to have an ID in the library, and he did not show it to the CSO or the officer. He does have some culpability in this, whether or not the police overreacted. Do not paint him as innocent, as he was not.

not quite sure where you got that assumption, but if you reread, you'll find that this isn't the case. I know it hurts - I've been tasered myself. That isn't the point - the point is, he resisted the police in the lawful performance of their duties.... the use of the taser was within regulations.... he deserved it, painful or no.

He's a fourth year. He should have known better. It's not like the CSO was specifically targeting him. The move was legitimate given the the fact that he didn't cooperate. Most UCLA students and alumni agree that the student went out of line. Trust me, there's a reason why they implented the rule to show your Bruin Card. The 2 posters above me would definately agree on that :)

Again, don't take this as a sign that I fully condone the officer's reaction-- I don't. However, to say that the student was not culpable in any way, or that the entire department is deficient, is simply not realistic.

I never said the student wasn't guilty. I'm saying that that kind of use of brute force is simply unacceptable on an unarmed student. Were they afraid that he was going to bludgeon them with a flash drive? Please.

campus polices are generally like that. They don't care about students that much, they only care if they can do their job no matter what. At my school's basketball games, there are always polices with sprays & guns & rifles. Some games have special force line up getting ready for post-game riots too. What the hell is that, there are students getting robbed on campus and they worry about people rioting? and use pepper gun and all those craps on students. We don't pay tax for those.
