What's a 'Community Bathroom'?

I'll be coming to the US for my undergrad and just read that my dorms have community bathrooms. What are they? How many people share them? Single-sex (Stupid question!)? Are they convenient?

Community bathrooms are shared by the people living on the floor. Instead of having your own bathroom in your dorm room, there is an area usually in the middle of the hall that has about 5 toilets, 5 showers, 5 sinks. The number 5 is just a general number, it varies from school to school depending on the number of students living in the hall, number of community bathrooms per floor, etc. On single-sex floors, the bathrooms are single-sex. On co-ed floors, they may have one for each or they may be together, but not likely. I stayed in a place with community bathrooms for a summer program and they were fairly convenient. Its not like everyone takes their showers at the same time.

Some are even smaller...some people can end up with 1 toilet and 1 shower for 8-10 people.

Here, there are 4 stalls, 4 showers, 2 sinks. This is for about 16 people and everytime I have ever been in there, I was the only one in there.... People seem to take showers at the weirdest times...

...or maybe you take showers at a weird time...

...nah just pullin your leg.

50 girls on my floor, 6 toilets, 5/6 sinks, and 5 showers. Maybe 1/3 of the time there were other people showering. The busiest time in the bathrooms was 11pm-2 or 3 am on weeknights, later on weekends. Early afternoon-after dinner everything's empty.

I enjoyed the community bathroom, but then we didn't have too many people getting sick all over, and I really liked the other girls on my floor.

community bathrooms freak me out. i'm sure it takes alot of getting used to.

If you have ever stayed at a hotel in Europe.. well they are like that(meaning community bathrooms)

I'm with leo 1988 here. I don't know how I will endure the loss of privacy that comes with college living. Oh, well. I guess time will tell.

P.S. Not all European hotels have community bathrooms. In fact, in the 3 weeks I was there (different hotel every 2-3 days), I (thankfully) never saw a community bathroom.

pretty sure he meant hostel, not hotel

Don't worry - college students don't shower that much.

ya I meant hostel, sorry.

Oh no I would definetely prefer my own bathroom

In this dorm it's nice for the girls because there are sinks in ever room... So they can put on/take off all of their makeup and all right from their room...
