Hey all. Just got accepted EA to WPI, with $31K/year presidential scholarship. Haven’t gotten my need-based aid package yet. Could anyone let me know where this is in terms of aid? It sounds like a lot and I’m thrilled about that but even so it leaves me paying $25-$30K/year, which is quite steep. Thanks for your input and congrats to my fellow accepted students!
I think if you are receiving a scholarship of 31,000 per year and tuition is $48,000/ year you would only be paying 17,000/year.
^^Plus room, board, travel, fees, and living expenses.
Gotcha - I thought the 48,000 included room and board - sorry
I think it all comes down to your EFC that was decided when you completed your FAFSA. By the way, congratulations on your acceptance. I also got accepted EA to WPI with a $37k/year presidential scholarship.
the school will never give you aid that combined merit and need based goes below your EFC. Need and Merit aid do not stack, they work together to bring you close to your EFC
Wowww. congratulations guys. Would you mind sharing your stats since your scholarship is so good… Wow…

Congratulations on you acceptance! My son also received a merit scholarship in the 30’s. As far as stats go, WPI is test optional, and my son never presented test scores. However, he is a bilingual dual-national from an under-represented country, and is currently doing the IB program as well as our resident country’s baccalaureate program (double the work, but lower grades). No clubs or sports as none are offered at schools in this area of the world. No class rank either, but the IB program here is highly selective.
I, too, am somewhat nervous about the need-based financial aid package, as our salaries are much lower than American salaries. However, I believe that the opportunities afforded by WPI’s project-based learning are well worth the financial effort.
I wish you all the best of luck!
I received 31k Merit, but need at least 37k to make it competitive with the state school that I can afford. Does anyone know if we can ask for more?
You can always ask. I know someone whose merit award was increased last year.
@Jplytc72 Congratulations, and impressive stats! I should’ve done more clubs, haha…I only just submitted my FAFSA/CSS, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Do you know when FA letters come out?
@leapyearG I know a lot of people ask–worst they can do is say no!
@WPIMom thank you! I hope that financial aid works out for your son.
Thanks everyone else for your input.

@abbidon do you think we have to decide right away if they increase the Merit scholarship? Still waiting to hear back from RD schools. I know that’s a BIG if
My son received a merit award, as well. I’m not complaining since something is better than nothing but it is not nearly as much as others have stated on here. We live comfortable, but not so well that we can come up with the remaining 50k / year and I certainly don’t want him borrowing six-figure student loans…no matter how much WPI students are expected to make for a salary their first year employed.
Hi,
I too have recieved a Presidential Scholarship worth 20k/year for WPI class of 2022.
Is this scholarship competitive and how many students recieve Presidential scholarships?
I’m hoping for better scholarships/placements in my upcoming RD applications.
Thanks!
@Sirius10 Have you applied for financial aid?
Yes and we don’t know those decisions yet but it’s not likely to be much if anything. We live in the area of the country with high cost of living and we do okay but we have three to put through school so I see some lean years ahead!
Does anyone how and when one would go about asking for more merit aid? I know I received a large sum, but 37k/yr only covers half the total cost to go to WPI.
@Jplytc72 I would start with the admissions rep for your area and express lots of interest. He or she will probably direct you to someone in the financial aid office. As for timing, I would wait for some of the declines to start coming in which will de-obligate some funds they have tied up in offers. But realistically, they aren’t going to cover more than tuition and your 80% of the way there now.
