Whats a good MP3 player for college?

I'm looking to buy one, and am wondering what everyone else likes. I have a windows pc computer, want something that works well and it doesn't have to store 1,000s of songs. Thanks for ur help :)

Id go with the Ipod. If you dont want something with a bunch of storage, you might look at the mini. Personally, I think my 20GB Ipod is perfect and leaves me with plenty of extra space to get more music.

Creative Labs.. you can get one that stoers 3592354's of songs for about 200 bucks.

iPod for looks.

Creative if you don't really care for LOOKS but care more for the MUSIC.

I haven't checked in a long, long time, but their old Zen Xtra model stored a lot of music for a very low price.

iPod Mini

$199, 4 GB... so that holds like 1000 songs (can hold more / less depending on bitrate, format, length)

Has display, transfer/charge on USB 2.0.

w/ mp3 players, it all matters where you get your music. if you use napster, yahoo, or anything like that: get an iRiver/Rio/Creative, etc. (anything but an Apple). If you use iTunes, you have to get an iPod. If you just buy CDs or get them from P2P stuff, you can get whatever.

I really can't stand the ipod.. just my personal dislike.. I love apple.. cant' stand the ipod. way overpriced. 200 bucks for a 4 gig ipod mini, or 200 bucks for a 30 gig creative labs.. Hmmmm...

ipod user interface is much much more usable than the creative devices.

Creative makes good hardware but their software always sucks (true in all areas and definately carried to their mp3 players). They are usable and they dont sound bad but the ipods are the reigning king of mp3 players not just because they look good but because they work well.

And yes, the ipod mini is a ripoff but for only $50 more you can get the real thing with a harddrive.

IPOD! IPOD! IPOD!

Trust me, it's the best mp3 player for sure. Ok, so you may be stuck with iTunes music store, but still I love this little white box that I'm listening to right now.

You can get cheaper prices at Apple's education store (<a href="http://www.apple.com/education/store):%5B/url%5D">http://www.apple.com/education/store):</a>
iPod Mini 4GB $179
iPod Mini 6GB $229
iPod 20GB $269
iPod Color 30GB $319
iPod Color 60GB $419

Avoid the iPod Shuffle, however. To me, the Shuffle is just a stupid cheap ripoff.

redski59--Thanks soooo much for that link! You just saved me $20!

If you have an iPod do you have to use iTunes? Are there any other (cheaper/free) sites that will work?

no. i download from winmx and limewire and you can convert files either to itunes by simply opening the file with itunes.

hm, would people recommend using winmx, limewire, or itunes? Can you get viruses more easily from winmx and limewire than you can from itunes? Is it easy to use winmx or limewire with itunes if you are using a Dell? Is it "illegal" to use winmx or limewire? Thanks so much!

I went for the iriver H320. I got the Korean firmware (in english) and now I'm watching family guy and south park episodes on it. That's the problem with Apple style marketing - you lose out on all the awesome third party stuff.

Jaimie17, iTunes is totally different than Limewire and WinMX. iTunes is a pay music store where you pay for songs, and get them directly from Apple. There is no way to get viruses through iTunes. Limewire and WinMX are P2P places where you get music from other people's computers. It IS illegal to download copyrighted music onto your computer from these programs, so beware. You have a higher chance of getting viruses from Limewire and WinMX, but as long as you don't download .exe or .doc files, you should be alright. In a nutshell: iTunes: Safe, Legal, Expensive. Limewire & WinMX: Free, Riskier, Illegal.

Merp. I have a 5gb Rio Canon - cost about $175. I actually choose it because it's less flashy and even smaller than the ipod mini in physical size. ^_^

I recently just bought a 20gb Zen Touch from Creative over an ipod. It was much cheaper for the same storage, has a sturdier case, and in my opinion sounds much better. There is less scratchiness and empty sound. Also, controls are fairly easy to use.

Yea I was looking on creative's website and I like their new zen neeon but I can't find it for sale anywhere yet. its between creative and ipod mini right now i think. thanks for all the awesome posts :D

iPod mini or shuffle!! Of course, I'm a Mac user so I really had no choice. Or you could just get a cheapy MP3 CD player and burn yourself a mix every few days. I actually did that for a while before I got my mini and it worked okay, plus you don't have to worry about people stealing it!

get an iRiver
my friend has one, he said it only cost about $250 and he's watching family guy on it
i got a 30 gb ipod and a 40gb photo (that cost twice the iriver) and i must admit, the ipods are overrated
