Hi CC,
I have taken the new SAT twice so far, and have a 1430/1600 as my best score with a 1470 superscore. My question is what is a “good” SAT score for top(?) colleges such as USC, UCB, UCLA, NYU. Should I be studying to take it one more time? Can an extra 50 points really make the difference? (Assuming all of my other stats/ECs are on par)
There is no “good” SAT score. Any applicant to a college or university should compare their test scores (ACT/SAT/whatever) to the particular school’s own acceptance data (if you can’t get acceptance data, then admissions or enrolled data is second-best). Most schools tend to post a 25%-75% range for testing. Unhooked applicants want to be closer to or exceed the 75%, especially at the most selective schools. But this gets into the idea of having a mix of reaches, targets/matches, and safeties, while understanding that there are never any true guarantees (well, rolling admissions can offer an early result).
