I got back my March SAT scores, and I did well in writing (770) but only got a 9 on the essay. This is weird for me because I'm typically a good writer. What is considered to be a good score for an SAT essay? I am looking at Ivy League and other prestigious schools, so what kind of scores do they expect, and do I need to retake the SAT just for the essay?

a good score would be 10+. Although you’re a good writer, the essay grading is subjective. The graders don’t grade it properly. They skim and read for like 2-3 min and move on. So, don’t evaluate your writing based on a score of a 9.

really, a 770 is good enough.

A 10, 11, and 12 are 99th percentile on the essay.
