So does this basically just refer to musical/arts accomplishments since the Common Application already asks for "academic" and "extracurricular" awards/honors/distinctions? If so, is it common for the majority of applicants to leave this section blank??

I'm thinking it means artistic award outside of school, humanitarian awards, etc. But mostly, it is talking about sports awards.

I put all of my music related awards under "non-academic honors"

You'll generally know if this applies to you- including athletics and music- but you should definitely not worry if you leave this section blank. (Remember, they include sections like this because it applies to some people, not because they expect everyone to fill it up.)

I put in music, debate, journalism - ECs, I guess - basically anything not directly related to an academic subject. But I'm hazarding a guess that the format doesn't matter too much - relax =)

Ahh ok, but can I get a confirmation that Debate stuff is considered a "non-academic distinction"??

if debate isn't a class in your school/you aren't graded for it, then it's not academic.

so i can include art awards...and sry if this ques. is dumb but can i submit an art portfolio?

Omg i put black belt in karate for academic award! smart right? so i added a little note * non-academic. I did my app. the old fashion way and didn't want to start over...

Somewhat pertaining to the topic, should little academic awards like "outstanding achievement" in such in such a class and school-wide speech awards be included in the academic awards section of the common app? I can't tell if they just want significant things like national merit listed there?

Cinnamon- outstanding achievement awards etc. are exactly what they want in the academic awards section (as well as national merit).

Ok, thanks Admiral. How about speech contests and state science fair awards?

My counselor considers academic awards as anything pertaining to school :P

non-academic awards are anything outside of school that you do?

so when it says ones that are "not already listed," I assume it means ones I didn't list on teh commonapp?

like harvard book award
