That's it. Someone explain? Thanks.

Any full length exam that's not a final

Not all profs call them prelims though...some just refer to them as exams...or midterms...whatever suits their fancy.

All the other schools calls them midterms. If you try to hide your school of origin and you use the word prelim to mean midterm, pretty much everyone knows you are from Cornell.

Also, I find it peculiar that dewdrop has started 0 threads... but has 1,366 posts.

And this is peculiar because?

I'm an alum...I'm here to answer questions and make comments as I see fit. I've felt the need to create a discussion thread.

Mmm, well not important in this discussion. It just sticks out every time I see one of your posts...

I just don't understand why it's a big deal. Like I said...I'm not here for me. I'm here to help prospective and current students.

Thanks Dew. You always answer my questions first and correctly, lol.

Yeah dew! but that "0" looks kinda funny, you should start one just for fun, I'm sure everyone would post...

^or not...

but yea it took me an entire semester to really figure out what a prelim was. thank you architecture! lol

if you are in the intro science courses (bio, chem) or psych 101, be prepared to have a lot of prelims.

What's even funnier is that I joined in January and I almost have 1,400 posts.

Now that I think about it....I did start a thread once. It regarded the new PeopleSoft system and how it was compatible with Leopard and Vista since students were concerned about that. For some reason, it's not showing up.

Anyway...if I ever feel the need to start a meaningful discussion thread, I will. But...I'm here for all of you! Not for me :-)

a prelim is properly known as a preliminary examination...

the reason cornell doesnt use the word mid-term instead of prelim is because most classes have 2 prelim exams before a final exam (3 tests for the semester)...

there are classes at cornell that use mid-term and final (2 tests for the semester) but these are classes that usually have a major paper (10+ pages) instead of 2 prelims and 1 final...

i think the main diff between cornell and other state universities is that at cornell you're worked really hard!
