First, take a step back from the CC mentality that there exists only two schools in this country - Harvard University and Northern Kentucky Technical and Community College...

What is, for the majority of schools in this country, a respectable SAT score?

I meant more like the minimum/range rather than a single score.

I get that my wording might not have conveyed that but I was hoping this thread could be for some student in the future who got their SAT score back but it didn’t necessarily meet CC standards. I know that if I was a Junior who took my first crack at the SAT and pulled off ~1700, going on the HS Life thread would destroy my self esteem, lol.

Its to prevent discouragement because this site as a whole can be quite discouraging, since its really easy to get caught up in the idea that CC is somehow a microcosm of the entire college admissions process when it really isn’t.

1500 (out of 2400). The majority of schools accept basically everyone.

More generally, a respectable SAT score is one that makes you competitive at the colleges you want to apply to. For most people on here, a 1500 would be too low because it wouldn’t make them competitive at the schools they’re applying to. Someone who actually wants or intends to get into a highly selective college is right to believe that a 1700 is too low, because in most cases it is.

@halcyonheather - I’ve seen you use that phrase before regarding college selectivity. I was confused what you mean by the majority of schools accepting everyone.

CollegeBoard says there are 3,944 colleges that it considers to be legitimate institutions of higher learning - what percent of those do you think accept “basically everyone.” Its an interesting thought, I just have trouble completely understanding it.

Well, literally I mean that more than 50% of colleges accept more than 50% of their applicants. I’m sure that’s true. Beyond that I really can’t say, though I’d be willing to bet that 70% of colleges accept more than 70% of their applicants.

@Repede - You made a mistake, though. There’s only 4 legitimate institutions of higher learning. HYPM. You’re just throwing your money away going anywhere else.

If someone tells me they got a 2000+ I’m automatically really impressed. My standards for myself are higher, but that’s just because statistically the schools I’m applying to are difficult to get into. Generally, 1800+ where I’m from signifies “smartness”

1800+ for me. I took the SAT for Duke Tip in 7th grade and got a 1750, then I took it freshman year for fun (not fun, but to see where I was at) and made a 1700…

I’m taking it Nov 2 (as a junior now) and hoping for 1800+ my practice tests tell me 2100 but I’m honestly just hoping to make it out of the 1700s XD

I think every score can be “respectable” depending on the growth the student has made.

EDIT: OH and with only those three schools, I would say 1500-1650

You can’t say if any given score is “respectable”, it’s all about the person and where they’re applying. That being said, for any given random, average person, I would probably say 1800+ is respectable, but I’m not going to look down on someone with a lower score lol. Usually 2100+ I would say is really really good, unless they tell me they’re applying to some crazy schools, then the bar should be set higher.
