I’m proud to have finally discovered CC, after listening to some classmates talk about mysterious people. “Carolyn” “Dooley” “interestedddad” “celebrian”
lol, I wonder what they are saying about that mysterious “Dooley” character…
I’ve got to admit, that’s the most unusual NYT headline I’ve seen. When it came up in an article search, my first glance made me think that some kind of HTML coding error had broken the page title.
On the other hand, it certainly stands out, and fits the theme of the topic perfectly.
I posted this in the Parent Cafe on a thread about the same topic. I hope it is OK to post it here and figure more will be reading this thread as it is a featured one on CC. Here is my post from the other discussion:
While the article brought up some of the down sides…such as raising anxiety or having lay people or other students provide false information or rate one’s chances, etc…it never really got much into the positive aspects. It didn’t really get into the support system. It didn’t get into really finding out inside information or first hand experiences from others who attend or visit a college or who have some information. For instance, I think a lof of parents on CC would agree that they have LEARNED a lot about the process and about the schools (and related issues) by reading CC…a lot of stuff you can’t read in a book. CC should never ever be someone’s sole source of information. Some things are BEST to learn directly from the colleges and not rely on what is read here. But some things can only be learned through word of mouth and not directly from a college. Experiential sharing is important. Support is important. There are also knowledgeable posters on CC and reputations as to who knows what they are talking about or not can be fairly determined over time.
I also frequent the musical theater forum and right now, anyone there will tell you that it is the best source of information out there about that very specialized admissions process. Readers on that forum would be the first to say that they never could have gone through that process without that forum which has proved invaluable to them.
So, I think the article missed out on some of the benefits or plus side of CC participation, even though the other points are quite valid.
But hey, I imagine the hits to CC will now go through the roof!!! :D<br>
(I added exclamation marks and emoticons on purpose if you have read the article, LOL. Berurah…you should read that part.) !!!
I remember one Sunday when someone posted how to make them all and I was good for about a week and now just stick with the one I know…:). I will have to retake the training course now.
I saw the article in the paper this a.m. as well and of course read it right away. In fact I was rather proud to show it to my family and say “see, CC is on the front page” because they give me grief for spending too much time here. The front page article gave me a little more respect maybe…
I too felt that it short changed CC. With respect to some people reading misinformation or bogus post, I don’t see that as such a problem. It seems to me that phony posters are outed right away by astute readers, and when I have doubted the credibility of a poster from time to time, it helps to read back thru a person’s past messages and put the information together.
And of course I have benefitted from all the information and support I have gotten. I suspect the writer isn’t a “”“regular”""
She was the first person I thought of when I read about the punctuation and emoticons— the exclamation queen herself. I’m surprised she hasn’t posted here in honor of the occasion Hey Berurah !!!
Actually, traffic has been so high this week a few thousand extra hits would barely register. Still, it’s nice to think some new people will visit and that some will join the conversation.
I’m guessing not many people read the article, because the name has since been changed. I can see why, the multiple emoticons and punctuation marks were actually kind of annoying.
yay CC! even though i’ll probably make my exit from this community now that i have my decision letters in hand, you’ll always have a special place in my heart
m_c…
You know how much you have gained on CC? The beauty of CC is the people on it. Just like others helped you in your college quest, now would be a good time to pay it forward to next year’s group. Share what you learned. When you get to college, pop in on CC and give readers an inside look and be available for questions. It is like going in a circle. You came, you got help, you conquered and now you pass it on to the next crop of students. You know how you craved information and advice? Now you are on the other side of things but others will crave just like you once did, so never forget what that was like. Think about giving back.
^^ definitely…next year its our time to help the new batch of seniors in their quest for college…
I have been quoted…makes me feel so proud…im quoted in NY TIMES wow…Man I Make CC and Roger Dooley Look Good
