what's best mode of transportation from lax?

shuttle, taxi, or bus? i'll be arriving at lax by myself. what's the most safe choice, you think? and the cheapest? fastest?

Cheapest: bus - you'll have to find out what routes go from LAX to UCLA.
Quickest and easiest: tax - rather expensive but quick and no hassle.

For the bus, it seriously takes a long time. You should allocate at least 2 hr. for the trip to UCLA. Take either the Green Culver City Bus line 6 or the Big Blue Bus Line 3. The Green bus is faster by about fifteen minutes. To get to the bus transit center, you need to take an Airport shuttle to the Green Line Station.

I would recommend a shuttle because a taxi would put you out nearly forty dollars, while a shuttle, which will take an additional half an hour to an hour to reach UCLA will only cost you half the price of a taxi.

2 hours from lax to ucla?? is that in heavy traffic? cause orientation check in is at 8am...so i'll have to arrive at 6am???

shuttle
it probably takes about 1 1/2 hours to get from lax to ucla, maybe less
it really depends on traffic
its better to be a lot earlier though

With traffic, I would say your best best is walking. =). No but seriously, traffic shouldn't be that bad going north on the 405 at 7am. So I would, If I were you, arrive at LAX about 6:30am. Traffic going south on the 405 sucks in the morning but not the northbound (the route you need). Hope I could help. Call a taxi or a private shuttle (i know it can be expensive but you never know with our stupid public transit system (ie: buses))

Which day of the week are you arriving on? If it's 8 am monday, for instance, the 405 is usually packed with traffic. Plan accordingly. I would strongly recommend a tax because it is the most convenient and quickest means of getting there on time. However, it can be quite pricey (around $40-50).

the 405 is always bad. always plan that its going to be bad.

^ True. However, there are some periods of time when the Southbound isn't as bad. North has traffic more often.

i'll be arriving 8am on monday, maybe i should just take a cab =/

oh, i meant my orientation is at 8am on monday. if i take a taxi then when should i arrive at lax?

before 7. maybe 6-6:30 ish. 7 might be really pushing it since its a monday and there will most definitely be traffic

if i take the bus, is the route confusing? do i have to change buses a lot? i'm not a native, and i don't want to get lost. is there a one-way route from lax?

is the shuttle a one-way route?

You just take shuttle bus 3 from the airport to the bus transit center. Then you take either the Green Line Culver City 6 bus or the Big Blue Bus 3. You do not need to switch buses and the route ends near the UCLA Ackerman terminal (which is a central campus location). Taking the bus is easy and you will not get lost, but like I said earlier, you need to allocate at least 2 hr. for the bus.

The shuttle route will be slightly shorter and Supershuttle stops are located right outside the airport terminals. However, with Supershuttle your trip to UCLA can still be time-consuming because Supershuttle circles the airport until it the shuttle bus is full. Then depending on who the driver decides to drop of first, you may spend additional time riding around Westwood or West LA while other riders are dropped off. The cost for Super Shuttle is $22.

A tax will get you to UCLA in about 30/40 min. most likely (that is how long it took me to get to my orientation last summer, but orientation day was a Thursday or Friday at 8 AM). The cost is about $38.

thanks guys. very helpful.

how about at around 7pm on a saturday night??

freeway conditions?

usually its still pretty bad. you're better off taking sepulveda surface street that is parallel one block east of the 405 and runs directly from LAX to very close to UCLA saturday at 7pm.

^ True. However, there are some periods of time when the Southbound isn't as bad. North has traffic more often.

Not true at all. How long have you been living in L.A? The northbound 405 is baaaad from about 2pm-9pm. (In other words, from LAX to UCLA at 6:45pm on a weekday would be at least 1 1/2 hours) Before that time it's moderately easy. Southbound 205 is a ***** from 7am-12pm.

That's exactly what I said. The Northbound 405 is worse than the Southbound most of the time. Southbound bad in the morning. Northbound in the afternoon when everyone is returning from work. However, there have been days when both have been congested on a weekday morning.

Yeah, but Ucla is northbound. There shouldn't be that much congestion around 6:45am northbound.
