what's better? a c in spanish III or an a in an elective??

Hi,

What would look better:

taking Spanish year 3 and getting a C and small chance of getting a B while working really hard and having a bad teacher.

Electve like graphic design with 95% of getting an A. easy goig class, can do homework in this class. fun. learn a skill.

don't say stuff like best option is getting an A in spanish. or do spanish but work hard. just tell me of those 2 which would be better. cus i did one, and my friend did one, and we are trying to figure out who was smarter. hahaha did the graphic design option.

so let me know!

and not for super competitive colleges or anything, just like UCSC and equivalent college to get into is what we are both looking at. thanks!!

so which option was better? and how important is having a 3rd year of Spanish?

more info:

fresh: span 1 A / A
soph: span 2 honors B / C
jr: nothing
sr: spanish 3 or elective?

my friend did exactly what i did and got same grades fresh soph in spanish and took span 5/6, and just got semster grades back and got a C working really hard, while i got an A in an elective. and now im considering takeing span 3 sr year.

but yeah, im not shooting for like UCLA. reach is ucsb. match is ucsc. stuff in that range.

if i dont take spanish, im gonna still take like 3 APs sr year. if i did i would probably do 2.

haha

and yeah, i was gonna do AP Econ and AP Gov (2 histories)
but i also wasn't going to take math did geo in 8th, adv alg, 9th, pre calc, 10th (did bad), stats jr, and now i have nothing sr year. Any suggestions abaout math?? Like something at community college? Haha thanks!!

Hmm, where have I seen this before? Sigh.

Personally, language is extremely important. Best scenario is that you have four years of language. May I ask why you seem so certain that you will get a C in Spanish? Maybe you’re more espa

Well, UCSB only requires 2 years of a foreign language. You should be fine.

Only two years is required by UNC as well, but you’ve got very little to get in with only two years of foreign language. I know OP isn’t applying to UNC or a UNC caliber school but you get the picture.

I don’t know much about UCSB though, so your words may be wiser.

I don’t know much either! But if the OP really was going to get C’s in Spanish if he continued, I don’t know if it would help more than just having the minimum 2 years. : )

A > C at first glance, always

The A of course. No matter what class that A is in, itll always look better!

I actually disagree. I think that a C in Spanish 3 looks better than an A in an elective course. Spanish 3 is a third year foreign language meaning it’s treated like an honors course. With that said, it looks better than an A in basket weaving, or basketball.

No. A C is always worse than an A.

Yeah, but what about having 3 years of a language, 2 years seems kind of weak to me.

No. A C is always worse than an A.

On the GPA scale, yes a C weights less than an A. There’s no doubt about that.

You have to look at things on a broader scale though. Grade point averages aren’t the only factor. Course rigor also has a huge influence on admission decisions.

With that said, getting a C in AP Calculus for example would look a hell of alot better than an A in basket weiving. My point is that in this case, getting a C in Spanish 3(which counts as an honors class) is better than getting an A in an easy elective class.

While that easy elective class may be “prettier” on paper, a 3rd year of a foreign language is much more valuable to colleges. Why do you think colleges require at least 2 years? Foreign languages are very important to them, and they would prepare to see a passing grade in a tough foreign language class over an easy A anyday. ;)

~ Theos

It is REALLY difficult to go a whole year without a language and then come back and be successful. I would take the Spanish because it is a much more useful skill to have than graphic design (especially if you’re gong to be living and doing business in Cali).

Incorrect, Spanish III counts as an academic/regular class. Honors Spanish III counts as an honors class. And OP has confirmed in another thread that the class we are discussing is regular:

If it was an AP Spanish class, then I would say that it does look a hell of a lot better. But it’s regular, not even honors.

I still recommend that you take the Spanish class. Since it’s senior year the college will only see the class you’re taking and not the grade until midterms. Although it may be tough to come back to Spanish after a year off.
