And i'm talking about SEAS in particular.

it's well neigh impossible to double major in SEAS unless the disciplines are highly correlated, like APMA and operations research, or APMA and APPH. you can't double major in a college major because you don't go to the school but you can do minors in the college (econ, poli sci, sociology etc.). If you really want to study econ for example and get recognition for it, then you can do the 4-1 program and graduate in 5 years with a BS in [seas major], BA in [econ or other college major], this involves taking the whole College core and finishing your full engineering degree plus all the college major related classes in the college.

to add on to what confidential said - i have heard of some of the most bizarre double majors (chemE, bioE - talk about heartache based on the sizes of those things, or electrical and OPR). but i think what concoll wanted to say is that it is 'rare' because it is not necessary. if you are the entrepreneurial type and want to take 6-7 courses a semester for 4 years plus maybe even some summers, you could do just about anything you want and if you can do so without it adversely affecting your grades - your adivisor will more than let you.

but then getting back to it - if you don't have to, if graduate schools will not somehow look more highly on you for doing so, why go through the effort?

as an addendum - the people i know who doubled majored or the one kid i know who triple majored in SEAS - are all currently in grad school solving all the world's problems.
