What's Duke's music school like?

I've tried researching this on my own but I can't find anything. Does anyone have any opinion on the quality/rigor or any of that stuff regarding Duke's music program/music major...?

Are you a singer, do you play an instrument or are you just interested in composition? If you are truly considering majoring in music you might want to attend a university that has better known music programs - like Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music, Lawrence (in Wisconsin), USC Thornton School of Music, Northwestern, Rice University, etc.

I think there might even be a thread for music schools on another forum.

If you haven’t been able to find anything about the school through your own research it’s because the reputation is not there yet - Duke has a Department of Music, not a School of Music.

Eh, I meant Department of Music. I want to go to Duke no matter what, but I’m interested in its music program because I might minor in music.

Moxess - since no one has answered your question I would suggest you contact Admissions and ask if you can speak with a student who is minoring in music or you might contact the Department of Music direct and ask them.

Someone actually answered through a PM and basically said the people they know in the department really really enjoy it. :)

The orchestra is a really fun group…they love their Conductor and take on some serious music along with guest vocalists/Opera once or twice a year…expectations for rehearsal hours is less than what you must do at a school like Vanderbilt where more people are music majors. Nevertheless, many Duke students are very competent players who played the entire time they grew up…and there are always a few stars on some instruments as well. My son also took private lessons and gained mentors that way that meant a lot to him. Lastly you should be aware that Duke Performances is a hugely well funded program. My son saw world class players in many instruments who normally grace the greatest stages in Europe and the USA…he found this aspect of Duke to be one of the most satisfying over four years…and no other college where he applied had the caliber of performance series that Duke hosts annually for students and for residents of the Triangle.

Sweeeeeeeet! Thanks for the info

my son is a huge Ciompi Quartet fan…never missed a concert of theirs and they add a lot to music lessons for string majors…also the Symphony travels once a year to do a fundraiser for a Duke connected hospital on the coast of South Carolina…you can see them perform there on youtube…just put in Duke Symphony…the work with Opera professionals last year was very satisfying for our son…two nights a week required and more right before performances
