So I got my acceptance letter today- auditioned on-site in February- but I don’t think I was actually accepted to the musical theater program. It says my intended major is “Theater” and that I have earned admission into the “theater arts track.” Is this a BA program? What are the performance opportunities like in this major? I’ve gotten into a few other programs for a Musical Theater BFA, so I am just trying to compare this with that. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you so much!

My D also auditioned in Feb but hasn’t heard anything yet. If you go to the AU website for theatre it looks like they have a performance track, a design track and a theatre arts track. It’s not exactly clear from the description how this impacts performance opportunities- I think at AU it is open to all in the Theatre dept since there is no BFA. Did you get an email, letter or packet? They say they are sending out notifications by 4/1 so this seems early. I would call someone in the dept. Did you also get feedback from your audition as they said they would?

I got a packet in the mail today, in a big blue envelope. They did provide about a half page of relatively positive feedback from my audition, with some good notes. But their whole program system is quite confusing to me. Thanks for your help, best of luck to you!

My D rec’d the email last night and today the large blue envelop from the university came. The first page in the packet said Admitted to the College of Arts and Sciences with intended major in Theater. Then, about 3 pages into the packet was a letter from Carl Menninger (Director of the MT program) congratulating her on her admission to AU and informing her of her admission to the MT major!
There was also information on page one about a Deans Scholarship! Yeah!

Does anyone know how many they auditioned and how many they are taking in musical theatre?

Hello! I’m a current musical theatre major at American and thought I might be able to clear a few things up. Mollysmom is correct that AU has three tracks: Performance (theatre or musical theatre), Design, and Theatre Arts. The Theatre Arts track is non-audition based and, technically, is not a performance track. However, many of the Theatre Arts majors are interested in a performance career and any one at AU, including non-majors, can audition for AU productions. Many students actually opt for the Theatre Arts major because it gives more freedom in course selection. Here are descriptions of the different majors:

Unfortunately, I have no idea how many students audition/were accepted this year. Congratulations to all of you and please let me know if you have any questions at all!

D accepted for musical theatre! Thanks American! First MT acceptance!

Congrats Mollysmom, I am sure this one will help you breath easier. I never said this would be an easy ride!

Thanks Camge! Didn’t know you posted on this thread. It’s been a rough road so it’s nice to get some good news for a change. What do you think about AU’s MT program? D really likes the BA program.

Does anyone know anything about the theatre program at University of Maryland. I know it is not an audition program but my D loves the school. She also has been accepted into the Theatre Arts track at American, and liked American U as well. Looking for some advice from people who may know both programs. Thanks!
