It seems as if these two buildings are the oldest and ugliest on campus. With the planning of the master plan and all the construction that will he happening, does anyone know what they plan on doing to Carney and Mac? keeping it the same, remodeling, tearing it down for a new building, etc?

A lot of campus expansion will be held up until BC buys off the City – literally.

I’ve also heard about reconstruction of the Plex. Though it won’t be in the near future.

Not much can move until the former apt building (2000 Comm Ave) is converted to a dorm, and that requires a city occupancy permit.

And to obtain that permit, BC will have to come up with some ($) grease for the local political machine and/or City Hall.

Carney is slated to be demolished (good riddance!) once Stokes Hall is completed. In its place will be a new dining hall, built in the collegiate gothic style of the original buildings. I’ve heard from an inside source that they want to move on this as soon as possible (Carney has had some structural issues aside from its hideous appearance).

The monstrosity that is McElroy will be around a bit longer, but it, too, will fall to the wrecker’s ball, thankfully. It its place is planned another academic building (I believe), also in keeping with the gothic aesthetic.

Meanwhile, Stokes is looking good! Exciting times at BC!!

Stokes hall is set to be completed by the new semester, and father Joe who is my courage to know teacher said that we’ll only be gaining 3 classrooms once stokes hall is done because they are tearing down Carney. Do you know when this will happen? Will it be just a dining hall, or what else will they have in that building? Also any idea when and what they plan on doing with McElroy? It does seem to me that these two buildings stand out a lot in a bad way! Truly an exciting time to be at BC!

It didn’t occur to me that the net gain in classrooms would be only three after Carney is gone. Is classroom space an issue?

I think McElroy will be gone in the next 5-7 years although it could be sooner. It’s replacement, again, in collegiate gothic, will be, I believe, an academic building with classrooms --certainly if there is a great lack of them that would make sense.

From what I’ve heard, Carney’s replacement will be a dining hall. What other function it might serve I don’t know. They want it to complement the gothic style that sets the tone for Middle Campus. It may include a cathedral ceiling.

“A lot of campus expansion will be held up until BC buys off the City – literally.”

I believe BC’s “expansion” struggles versus the City of Newton were finally settled in BC’s favor a couple of years ago. At that point construction of Stokes began. The college now has the green light to implement its Institutional Master Plan. A lot of continous building will take place as long as the funding is there.

I wouldn’t really call it “expansion” at this time, rather it is more like improvement on the properties already held. Certainly, acquiring the Brighton Campus recently and the Newton Campus in the 1970’s could be thought of as expansion, but even there I think total enrollment stayed the same.

by “City”, I meant the Big Kahuna, that dense mass to the east :)

Boston City proper is where the Brighton Campus technically sits, and that is a major part of the expansion/movement/housing holdup, particularly of Lower Campus. Before demolition on existing Lower Campus buildings, those functions and students need to move somewhere first, i.e, Brighton Campus and other residential housing options. It becomes a domino effect, and The City knows it.

check out the history of 2000 Comm Ave, for example. Currently owned by BC, the College is prohibited by the City from converting that apartment building into undergrad College housing. And until 2k Comm Ave gets an occupancy permit, Lower Campus construction is basically on hold, which include replacing Thomas More Hall, the Plex and Soph dorms.

Thanks for clarifying that, bluebayou, and for an update on the Lower Campus situation.

Are you sure it affects the demolition of More Hall, which used to be the Law School and is now the development office (?)? It has never housed students. Seems to me that it could be razed and replaced by a new dorm, as planned, without a problem. It wouldn’t deprive any students of housing by being torn down.

Same could be said for the Plex.

leanid:

Not sure about the demo schedule. But in addition to More, I think the plan was to take down Edmonds (which will chase all of the rats to Walsh!) and The Plex.

And yes, some of the staff offices formerly in More have been moved to Brighton already.
