What's good about Boston University?

I watched the video about the school on theU.com
Wasn't too impressed...the dorms aren't that good for freshmen and the academics don't seem too bright (from what i saw). I haven't heard about the school through word of mouth though. What are the pros and cons of BU?

obvious pro: LOCATION! Boston is awesome! :)

i dont think BU has any significant advantage over UCs..(your instate school) besides maybe location...however, most of UCs have awesome location too...in my opinion...haha

I suggest doing your own research rather than basing an opinion off a video. Boston U is certainly tops in my field.

I have a friend at BU who started as a sophomore due to IB/AP credits. He got a rather nice suite his first year, as I recall.

If your idea of college is a tranquil setting with manicured lawns, BU isn't for you. Its uninspired buildings stretch along a mile or so of bustling Commonwealth Ave,, just west of Kenmore Square. Fenway park and many cultural instututions are really really close.

Why don't you ask this question in the Boston University forum? We are from California and although he is buried under a foot of snow right now, my S loves it. Like warblersrule86's friend, he can graduate in three years due to AP credits. He has decided to earn degrees from both the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Communication, so he'll take three and a half years instead.

nothing.. thats why they say it sucks to BU =)

just kidding, i enjoy the rivalry between BC and BU and there are great things about BU.. everyone i know there seems to love it. bostons an awesome city and if you want the city then BU is right there. academics are solid and its a nice atmosphere. check out their websit and the BU forum. go visit too

Obvious pros: Great college town, great academics, lots of resources for students. Kind of a star in certain fields, like biomedical engineering. Some really nifty programs/departments (e.g. their Cognitive and Neural Systems Department/major). From what I can tell, undergrads have opportunities to be involved in research/scholarly work, and there are a lot of student activities.

Huge con: It's a police state. It was the bogeyman that our administrators at MIT used to try to scare us with. "You think that we are cracking down on you, but just think, you could be at BU! We could put some of their policies in place; then you wouldn't complain about what we're proposing now!"

BU even has a great study abroad program. "opportunities exist through 34 programs, spanning 16 countries on 6 continents."

It's expensive and doesn't have much of a campus. Many kids love it. I would not.

My S spent last summer at a BU summer camp. Loved it. True, the dorms are not that nice, but he was very impressed with the fitness facilities. Big worry; besides the tuition, etc., students spend a lot of money playing off campus.
