What's good about Yale besides prestige? Of course I can't go into a school just because of its prestige. What makes it different from other Ivy League? What are its strong departments/weak departments for undergraduate? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You should try searching the forums. Go to harvardrejects.org. There is a wealth of information out there and it would probably be more helpful if you looked them up yourself rather than waited for others to tell you. Just an idea :)

Residential College System. Enough said.

btw, tristan101, many yalies also got into Harvard, so, not funny.

^ sorry didn’t mean for it to be insulting; i just thought the idea was clever (for the wrong reasons of course )

OMG?! Harvardrejects.org actually REALLY redirects to Yale.edu? Must have been set up as a previous (or current) Crimsonian. (:

hmm is it true that Yale is the most liberal artsy ivy?

^You can’t have superlatives like that (i.e. ‘most liberal artsy ivy’) but in general, Yale has a reputation towards that end.

that might be Brown.

okay, maybe I shouldn’t have said “most” - considerably liberal artsy?

another thing I heard about Yale is that its very laid back and not as cutthroat as other ivys.

Where did Yale get this reputation? just wonderin.

OP, I suggest you check out the website c o l l e g e p r o w l e r.com for starters :]

I’m a freshman and all my classes have less than 20 students. The Directed Studies program I’m in is mind blowing, and the caliber of students you interact with every day is astounding. Top professors in their field know you by name after a first few days of class.

Um… the food is awesome. They have the best hotdogs I ever ate, and they try to vary their food a lot.

Um… the place looks like a fantasy world?

Squirrels?

I’m kidding. Though I do like the squirrels on campus. Yale is an amazing school, and I can’t dream of being anywhere else. Everyone is friendly and I don’t know anyone that hates being here.

“Everyone is friendly and I don’t know anyone that hates being here.”

I have visited literally hundreds of campuses in the U.S. and around the world, and have a lot of Ivy League friends. Yale is the only place I have heard described in this way. That really says something.

I’ve thought about a few reasons why this might be the case (e.g., campus design, unparalleled quality of undergrad education, density) and posted them in other threads, but I’m still a bit perplexed as to the why Yale is generally so much friendlier and happier than any other colleges or universities.

Oh? ;)

I agree about the residential college system being a big draw. Lots of colleges have happy and friendly students and great architecture. Very few have such a residential system.

lol the harvard rejects site is a copied from the stanford rejects site idea.

That said I always thought when people said the residential college system they were making a big dal out of a small thing, but it actually is a very legitimate reason to come to yale.

I’m a freshman here, and I can tell you that it’s absolutely true that everyone here is exceptionally friendly. How it got this way perplexes me a bit as well, but I can tell you why it remains this way. When people are treated with such kindness by virtually everyone (students, teachers, cooks, custodians, even a local homeless person I met) and enjoy these ideal circumstances they reciprocate appropriately. I can honestly say that I am generally a nicer person here than I was at home. This place is like paradise. Four years seems too short =(

btw that was directed at posterX

Freshman D feels the same way. Her suitemates are all friendly, caring wonderful kids. They take care of each other and stick together by texting and making sure they all have someone to eat with, go out with, etc. There is something at Yale for everyone and it’s all so organized. I know D has signed up for too much but she can figure that out for herself. After three weeks I’m happy to report her Yale experience has been wonderful - she’s homesick but not because of her circumstances at Yale. She just wishes her family could live at Yale with her!!!

^ A number of other universities claim to have a residential college system, but none of them really have a system anything like Yale’s. Harvard’s and Rice’s are the closest, but in many ways they don’t compare. Visit the schools for a few days each and you can see for yourself.
