I'm interested in rushing for a sorority in the fall as a freshman.
can anyone tell me what its like ? & if it's super competitive? how many girls usually rush and how many of them usually make it ? any sort of info will help. thanks !

From what i know, most sororities can be competitive but most of the pledges cross. I only hear about a few pledges DPing but when you spend so much time and money into something, it’s dumb to not follow through. You find more info during the first few weeks of Fall Quarter. There’s this club/organization event at OPERS where all the different clubs, frats, and sororities will be there to recruit haha. Keep in mind tho, there are such things as co-ed frats and you might want to pledge for them! For example, Alpha Phi Omega.

Frat/Sorority houses aren’t allowed on the actual campus grounds, but there’s nothing restricting folks from getting together off campus. There’s tons of sororities/frats out there though, and they do plenty of events out on the fields (especially during Greek Week)

I myself am a member of Sigma Mu Delta, and it’s one of just about 2 Professional Fraternities out there (Pre-Med). There’s some professional sororities as well, but if you’re into the party life and just going wild you’ll definitely be able to make out which sororities are about that during the OPERS festival.

is the greek life really competitive to get into ? i know at some schools it’sr eally hard to get in. I did stuff like greek week in high school and i loved it. I also love the philanthropy stuff.

What what I can take from your attitude on here missy, I doubt you’ll have a hard time getting in. There are enough options to where nearly everyone who has the dedication to join can do so.

However it all depends on the fraternity and sorority. In SMD, it was very hard to get into, but not because of idiotic hazing or competing with my peers. It was all focused on your own strength and dedication. If you enjoyed it in highschool and you have the initiative, it shouldn’t be a problem, even to get into one of the typical “preppy/jock” ones like Alpha Psi, etc

As to your original question about numbers, some big time frat/sororities have upwards of 40 people rushing at once. Others that are more focused on tradition, professionalism, or specific traits in their members, usually rush around 10 or so people a quarter.

For example, Alpha Phi Omega can rush around that 40 mark, if not higher. But a fraternity like Sigma Mu Delta usually rushes 10 or less members.

I don’t think many of the sororities have any big restrictions regarding that though, so you should be fine.

thanks ! this helps a lot ! i’m really excited for rush week
i know they have the Panhellenic/national sororities and the local & ethnic ones. I really like some of the organizations that the Panhellenic like Gamma Phi and Kappa do philanthropy for because i’ve done some work for those organizations before. Are those sororities more difficult to get into ?

I’m also interested in rushing a sorority this upcoming fall, but I’m entering my fourth year (on a 5 year plan, so I still have 2 more years here). I’ve looked into a few, and I really like Kappa Kappa Gamma (I’ve done my research on different philanthropy projects they’ve done and they all sound like something that I would love to be apart of). Does being a fourth year hurt my chances at making in through rush week/being accepted in the sorority? And as a more general question, do sororities/frats base who doesn’t make it through on numbers (like is there a maximum number of people that can be in a group) or is it strictly based on personalities of the new members?

Just to be clear, I’m speaking from my experience with my own fraternity, so take my advice for what it’s worth ladies.

Universitygirl, I honestly don’t think that the Panhellenic or national sororities are harder to get into. While they may be more choosy because they aren’t focused on building their organizations, I doubt you would have a problem. With your hard work and enthusiasm I don’t see why they wouldn’t want you in.

Aquafina, no there’s really no reason that your seniority can hurt your chances to join a sorority, in fact many of them like folks in the upper classes because they can impart more knowledge on the younger/newer members.

Some sororities/frats do base who gets in based on numbers. They may have too many kids rushing, or have given out too many bids. However that’s not a common thing that happens. In our frat we usually stay within the 10 or so member range each rush quarter, however in my case I am part of the Charter class for the Santa Cruz chapter. My class had 18 members in it. But again, that’s a special circumstance.

For other frats and sororities I don’t think many of them ever worry about numbers. To them, the more the merrier. I’m sure both of you ladies will have great chances of getting in and enjoying yourselves :P

thanks ! you’ve been so helpful ! do you know if they usually start rush week on a monday ? because i have a class monday night and i really dont want to miss out on anything !

Just keep an eye out for any info on events because it may or may not be on monday.

^ That.

And just as well, all the frats and sororities don’t advertise themselves every day or in the same places during Rush week. It’s a general time frame.

The BEST place to get your questions answered would be during the OPERS Fall Festival which is on the 20th I think. Pretty much everyone from campus will be there to answer any concerns you’ll have.

Enjoy yourself missy

Hey!
i’m in one of the 2 national panhellenic sororities on campus so if you have any questions, feel free to message me!
Greek life is pretty awesome once you’re on the inside of it all since not much of what we do is seen on the outside.
Even though i was a freshman when I rushed last year, i know we had seniors who rushed and made it also!
as far as i remember, rush started on tuesday so i believe it starts on Tuesday the 27 this year

Hey guys, I’m also in one of the two panhellenic sororities on campus and I can answer questions as well! If you’re interested in joining, be sure to check out the UCSC college panhellenic facebook page! (I’ll put a link) Links to each of the org’s pages are on that site so you can check sororities out and learn more about what it’s like to go greek! Enjoy and see you all at rush :)
