Hey everybody! Just wanted to share a little bit of what Viterbo is up to this year in the way of our musical theatre program!

We are going to be opening A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum tomorrow in our main stage theater and it runs until this Sunday. After that we will be opening a production of Marat/Sade in our Black Box. We just finished up a remount of a student produced/choreographed/directed dance piece about homelessness that also showed in the Black Box. We will be having auditions for our next season in a few weeks and we will be putting on A Chorus Line and Picnic. A Chorus Line will be showing in a brand new theatre space that is being built this year downtown by the river. It’s going to be amazing and will give us so many more opportunities to do work! Picnic will be produced in the Black Box space.

NATS are coming up soon and a lot of the music theatre students are competing. Last year we hosted NATS at our school and Viterbo students made up many of the semi finalists; one of our sophomore girls won the lower division college level.

We have lots of exciting alumni news lately! One of our female alumni was just cast in the national tour of A Chorus Line, a male alumni appeared in the TV show Leverage in a recurring role this season, and another one of our male alumni just had a guest appearance on Chicago Fire, a new NBC drama.

If anyone is considering auditioning at Viterbo and has questions, please feel free to message me! I could not be happier that I am attending this school and I feel like I am growing as an artist an immense amount. Hope everyone has a wonderful year of auditioning and learning and growing. :)

Thx unicornwave-can you tell me what a typical freshman schedule is like, do freshman get to audition, how many performance opportunities are available each year, do you do much in the way of new works, and what is campus life like?

Hi Broadway95! Sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to you. Freshmen can audition their second semester and first semester they are on crews (usually lighting) for the semester. I really enjoyed having the free time that first semester because adjusting to college was a task in itself. It was also the only time I’ve had any free time at all during my time at Viterbo. We do a musical and a play each semester that are produced by our faculty but we also have opportunities to do student produced works throughout the year.

In terms of new works, next year is going to be very exciting for that! We are having a Dance Rep show that will be all new work, a physical theatre show that will be set on us, and a puppet show that is going to be a new work as well. Next spring we will also be having a guest director from our sister school, St. Mary’s, in London, England.

Campus life at Viterbo is what you make of it. Lots of the students go home most weekends but since many of the theatre students come from far away (and always have rehearsals) there are always plenty of people to hang out with. The atmosphere on campus is extremely welcoming and open and there are millions of ways to get involved if you want to!

This weekend we have the gala for our new space, the Weber Center for Performing Arts on Saturday night. I was in the cast of A Funny Thing…Forum and we are remounting “Comedy Tonight”. There are also performers from the local community theatre doing work.

I hope that was a helpful and please let me know if you want to know anything else! I hope we see you for a visit sometime soon. :)
