*es the student body look and act like? Etc.

Sent from my PC36100 using CC

Well for starters it in the city so of course there is going to be a little crime and the student body they are some of the brightest and hardest workers you’ve seen. There are few that get distracted by the parties but make sure you are balanced. there is a party almost every weekend so getting distracted could be easy.

but a about the professors they all want you to succeed and they all care about you individually. I will be a freshman there next year and I cannot wait

Thanks for the input, what made you decide on Howard?

Well first my older brother went there and they offered the most money. But I also felt that I would be joining a big family. Not only howards but also hbcus everywhere. I’m not even a student there and I have already been invited into the family but the many current students I’ve talked to

Howard actually doesn’t jump out at you while you’re driving down the main road, it kind of sits back. Then you have to turn into a street about 10 centimeters wide (jkjk) to get to the main strip that Howard is on; I know, sounds kinda small lol…As far as the school as a whole, I have not seen one with as much pride as Howard. I went there in March for accepted students day and it was like every student there was high on life and programmed to be perfect students (even though that sounds like great exaggeration). Everyone greeted me and my family with a smile and their personal introductions, and I mean everyone; I’m pretty sure they’re told to do that though lol…As far as the student body as a whole, almost every student I seen there was well-groomed (In addition, I didn’t see any girls there that I would rate under a 8 lol)

The students had great pride, understood who they were, why they were there, and had great aspirations, but they reminded us time and time again that they were actually students lol…They still partied, had friends, went to sports games, and goofed around from here to there; everyone there seemed down-to-earth.

Now when it comes to the facilities, they can be a lot better. Drew Hall looked like a factory from the outside and a hospital from the inside lol, and I mean, I don’t mind, because I was never one to complain about the conditions my surrounding areas, but I wonder if that’ll change being that I’m going to be living there for at least a year. The annex was probably the newest dorm on campus, but it’s an all-female dorm, so I didn’t see it lol

The A building is what everyone says it is: BUSY. I went in there to submit my enrollment fee and I was in line for like 40minutes even though they had about 10 workers who were doing the same job lol, luckily for me I was the last person who was able to come inside for my batch; there were like 50 more people after me. Imagine how long they were waiting for lol

From being there only a few days, it seemed like all of the major events were held in Cramton Auditorium and Blackburn, and it seems like the events are usually crowded.

As for the surrounding city area, I’ve been there like 3 or 4 times now and I see no difference between northwest dc and any other city…of course you’re going to have some litter, some crime, maybe a few bums and panhandlers here or there, noisy nights, but like I said, where don’t you get that at? Personally, it’s nothing new for me, and it’ll probably be very easy to adjust to, but like I said before, Howard is off of the main street, so if you walk outside of your dorm at 3am to go to the library, you’ll be on Howard’s little inner-circle, well that’s what I like to call it lol

As a whole Howard seemed great when I went there. Although the business program and a scholarship attracted me to the school, the close-knit family feeling made me stay with my choice…can’t wait to be there august 11th lol

(btw, excuse the grammatical errors and texture of this text; I know it’s horrible written and probably hard to understand. I haven’t had to type something this long since like january for my mid-term lol, I guess I’ll just blame it on senioritis lol…excuse the typos as well because I don’t really feel like going back and proof reading this lol)

wow im looking at how long that post was now; it definitely didn’t seem that long when I was typing lol

Lol no problem on the typos. Thanks (you both) for commenting. I’m just trying to get a feel of the school and how it is, since I live in Florida and probably won’t be able to visit until maybe winter break in my senior year. I’m leaning towards Howard because I’ve noticed how nice all the students look and dress on Tumblr and Twitter (superficial I know lol), plus Howard has great scholarships, it’s located in the city (I live in a small town), and because I’m in the IB program I don’t see a lot of smart black kids and being surrounded by them would be awesome. Also, our forum is kind of dead -_-, lol. Do any of yall know about my favorite activities/places: eating(caf

Kiddo! I’ve been meaning to talk to you. I just didn’t know how to get in contact with you. But I know there are small eateries around idk how fancy they are though. And there are a few libraries on campus and also gym to exercise.

Yeah I haven’t been on here in a long time lol, I’d come to Howard’s forum about twice a week and I’d always see the same post that was updated on like april 28th or something like that lol so I’d just leave…

as for all of the eateries, I know that there is a McDonalds right across the street from the school; theres a subway there, a few chinese restuarants, some soulfood places, a potbelly; I think I saw a five guys over there too lol

you can probably work out at burr gymnasium or whatever its called lol

haha i would do the same thing. but after talking to a few of the current students at howard i decided that I’m going through with changing my major from finance to computer science. i loved the business school but i dont think a business major is right for me. i will see you on campus still though. What dorm did you get? I’m in a double in drew

you officially changed it? why don’t you just test it out for the first year and see all of the opportunities in both fields and then base your selection on that, remember when we were there they said the business school is the hardest to get into and its even harder to get into once you’re already there lol…and yeah, im in a double in drew as well

As a parent, I visited there with my daughter in march, who is a junior. My husband and I FELL IN LOVE! Heck after the tour, WE wanted to go back to college to Howard, and we felt that we had missed out on a great college experience. Yes, its not in an affluent area, but it wasnt that bad. My daughter has been raised in a pretty nice section of town and she didnt think it was bad either. It is not number one on my daughters list, but she is definitely applying. After the general tour, one of the professors of the individual colleges toured us, and spent over an hour with us. She introduced my daughter to other professors, and to the dean of that college. Where else can you receive that type of attention? As a previous poster mentioned, they want you to succeed! I do have several friends that graduated from Howard and the alumni network is off the chain. You definitely will have a gazillion networking opportunities. Also, HBCUs have better job placement than a lot of universities. I could go on and on.

That’s awesome for you and tour daughter, my mother’s a bit hesitant about Howard because of it’s in the city.

Kiddo yeah I did. It just wasn’t for me. I liked the close family feel of their engineering school. Sorry man I tried but I fell in love with their computer science program. I’m gonna try to get an internship with microsoft or goldman sachs my freshman year.

Thedreadone just tell you’re mother that where in the city if there not a little crime. As long a you are aware of your surroundings you should be fine

Sent from my DROIDX using CC

well i respect your decision either way, and if you just happen to change your mind again you’d might have first dibs with the admissions committee lol

and to dreaded…honestly, i doubt you’d even feel the least bit intimidated by the crime…I mean like I said before, of course things will be different…it’ll be a littler noisier and the pace things will move at may be a bit faster but other than that I don’t see why you wont be fine…I’ve had a few relatives there and they haven’t had problems with it and they say that the stereotypes are generally overrated…as long as you’re knowledgeable and savvy about the basic city life things are probably a breeze

I appreciate it. I can still get you onto the facebook pages if you want. good luck with everything see you on campus
