What's it like going to Columbia- environment wise?

Is it really fast-paced? How much of a campus does Columbia have? Is it odd for a student to lay down in the campus green? How expensive is it to live there?

I had considered applying to Columbia earlier this past summer, decided not to, and am thinking about doing so again. I'm undecided and i figured that Columiba's strong core would help me decide what i wanted to do. But then I considered living in the city and thought i wouldn't like it. I've heard that it's not as hectic as NYU, which i also decided not to apply to, so i'm considering it again. I would really like to hear the opinions of past and present students about Columbia's enivonment.

omg this post confused me so much haha just apply. although if you didnt that would make my chances of getting in THAT much better but go for it. its an amazing school in an amazing city, take a whack at it :)

Ask yourself how much of a difference not being able to lie on the lawns will make.

it’s common for people to lie down on the lawns. they can get quite crowded, though, on sunny days  the campus isn’t large, but it’s nice and gives some distance/separation from the city. There are also parks close to campus. The neighborhood itself around Columbia is relatively quiet and sedate, compared to other areas of the city. Overall it’s a relaxing environment given that it’s in manhattan – very different than nyu in that respect.

it’s a fantastic campus. it has a very collegey-vibe on campus and you can read outside, sit on low steps and read, etc. but you’re literally minutes away from midtown and the Manhattan everyone knows and loves =D
so you can concentrate and live like a college student during the weekdays, but explore and have during the weekends…

Environment-wise, Columbia has the best of both worlds. You get to take advantage of Columbia’s breath-taking campus (which I love) by hanging out with friends on Low Steps, or spending an afternoon studying in the awesome Butler Library. On top of cool stuff like that, you also have New York City literally right outside your door. A quick 10-minute subway ride puts you in Times Square or in the Garment District (34th St).

It’s really as fast- or slow-paced as you personally want to make it, which is what I love most about Columbia!
