What's it like to intern in science/research over the summer?

I think I might lean more towards the humanities, but I'm interested to know what the science/research experience is all about. I know someone who's been doing lab-work since middle school, which completely wows and bewilders me. So what exactly goes on when you do summer internships or programs in scientific research? Or major things like RSI and the like? I have this conception that you really have to be intensely dedicated to science to take part in these kinds of opportunities - but it's something I'd like to give a try, if I wasn't so intimidated. What have your experiences been like? If I've really never done lab-work before, aside from the occasional AP chem lab :P is this a big no-no?

Personally, I got to work on my own project over the summer. The professors and the graduate students each had their own project to do so they just basically showed me the ropes and I was basically on my own after that (of course they were always willing to guide me through some tough spots). I know it's very different in other situations and varies from lab to lab (I was in the field of medical imaging). I also know that one of my friends helped a graduate student on one of his ongoing projects. But, after all, it's research and I couldn't have asked for more.

Do you happen to know how I might find a science internship? (Is there a search engine somewhere... or?) -- I have a biology related research project -- and it seems like SSP and other programs often mentioned in this site doesn't really contain biology.

Does anyone know of anything that perhaps is just "like" a "bio-SSP"?

Thanks!

At first, you'll feel like you're in way over your head, and this is probably true in the beginning at least. It's a great experience, though, because you learn very quickly, and the independence you're given is a refreshing change from high school.

don't know where you're located; this looks interesting:

good luck!
